I won two eBay auctions last night. This one:

So, now I have all 17 silver dimes made between 1992 and 2009. I paid a fifty cent premium on each coin, or there abouts, but I think I got a pretty good deal considering the only way to get these is by breaking up a silver proof set.

Which makes me wonder if it is really profitable for a seller to break up a set like that? I suppose if he bought some of these sets in the 90's he might be making a profit. But, I can't see someone breaking up a 2010 or 2011 set only to sell the dime so cheaply.

Well, you see on Feabay quarters sold individually in the sets still! So, people do crack 'em!

I always thought the purpose of a set was to have a set. I've never been a fan of of breaking sets up.

Oddly enough, things change and others have different preferences. We see silver proof set coins cracked out and sent in for grading all the time. TPG graded coins are a whole aspect of the coin collecting hobby/industry that has come along to create this niche of the hobby which focuses very technically on grades and superior conservation. Collect what you like and how you like. There isn't one set of rules on how to approach the hobby.

let me know what you want for them because I need the Silver Proof Dimes to finish my Dansco Album..and yes I break up proofs all the time..they are cheaper than buying the coin individually.
