Okay...trying to decipher Red Book production figures for the years where satin coins were made (2005-2010). Do figures for a coin in each denomination section include the Satin quantities or is it all the business strike numbers?
No responses....guess I was not clear. In the Redbook...there are production figures with each coin in its denomonation section....so for 2005, the Westward Journey American Bison Denver Nickel has 487,680,000 as a production number. Also in the Redbook....back in the Mint Set section....there is a 2005 P & D Mint Set (which includes the nickel) and it has a production of 1,160,000 Now...the Mint Set is made with Satin Finish nickels. Are these satin finish nickels included in the total nickel production figure? If so, then there are 487,680,000 American Bison Denver Nickels Total 1,160,000 are Satin finish and 486,520,000 are Business Strike coins I know this may seem trivial...blame it on the engineering brain paying too much attention to detail....however, I would like to know if this is correct or if there are actually 488,840,000 non-proof nickels based on the two numbers in the Redbook.
Even though all prior years, and now subsequent year from 2011 (since no more Satin from the mint), the book has included mint sets in the production numbers and the book has not broken out Satin as a variety??
Prior to 2005 Mint Set numbers were included in the production numbers. And starting with 2011 they will be again. The only reason that the satin set coins were not included in production numbers is because the satin coins are an entirely separate type. Coins in the Red Book have always been separated and numbered by type.
I agree with your comments....however, the satin coins are not listed as a type in the Redbook....that is why I have confusion.
Not all coins of a different type are listed in the Red Book - as a different type. Examples would be the Satin Proof and Matte Proof 1921 Peace dollars and the '98 matte Kennedy half. Then you have '94 and '97 matte nickels. So there are some exceptions that are not listed as a separate type. That doesn't mean they aren't a separate type though.
