Numismedia lists FMV of $81 in VG8. I don't know how to translate those prices into retail or collector-to-collector expectations. I generally wouldn't pay Numismedia FMV for a coin, but I'm a cheapskate and bottom-feeder by nature.
Looks like a nice coin . What is the asking price ? If it is at auction, I would bid $45.00 for this one and leave it on the table if it goes beyond that.
My advice would be to leave it. These are somewhat scarce but certainly not unobtainable at a reasonable price for that grade.
Both. Even with the price of silver and melt value's today, an example in that grade can be had for $55.00 . The current bid/ask prices are $75.00 /$85.00 respectively . Dealers rarely buy or pay those prices. A reasonable buy price is $55.00 , which this auction has already hit and will probably go higher . One needs to have patience when shopping, as impulse buying or buying at the high end for items that regularly come to auction . Don't get caught up in " I gotta have it now " . If the op's bid at the $45.00 bid stood a bit, I would have told him to increase the max bid to $55.00, but as you see there are other strong bidders in the auction and that, will almost always result in the item being over bid by those that seem to feel they have to " gotta have it now " if if they over pay . Here is one at auction also :http://cgi.ebay.com/1878-CC-CARSON-...S_Individual&hash=item19c22cb6cb#ht_830wt_793
If you actually wind up getting the coin for under 45.00 at least you have an option to get it graded and have some profit potential room to boot.
indeed, what do you think about this coin: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270689222536&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I hope no one viewing this thread will inflate the this high bid in this auction and this OP a chance to win this offering. Jello, your quote is historically correct for the most part, no doubt . However, I again fall back to one who has patience and shops will usually snag better deals than going with the typical norm impulse .
