Are these coins sterling silver? There doesn't seem to be much of a price difference in comparison at all, which is mostly the case. Just had to ask as I didn't think that Mexico made sterling silver coins? Anyone know? Is there a link I can be directed to? :thumb:

1949, 1978-1980 onzas are sterling silver.
Sterling is .925 fine. Your coin states "Ley .925" - Spanish equivalent.

I tell you, on a bullion silver coin, I love the imagery of the design. A coin press and balances are just a perfect commemoration of coining on a coin.

Oh yeah beautiful yet simple design that never goes out of style, I love it. That said, I am surprised that the pricing when either buying or selling isn't any different than a .999 coin, at least on ebay. That in itself speaks highly of the design. :thumb:

I believe that the 1949 Onzas circulated as coins for a short period,
as some are found in worn condition.

I wonder if the 1949 is being restruck, anyone know? I forget what my book says but it was initially a small mintage, I think it was like 10,000 or less on the 1949. There always seems to be a fresh 2 or 3 on ebay, in fact I just won one a couple days ago!! :D

Even though it is .925 silver, it contains one troy ounce of pure silver.

The Krause catalog I have (2005) shows a mintage of 1,000,000.

    They are not rare.
