I have a coin my father got from his father. The only person ever looked at it said it could be worth 200grand. Indian head half eagle 1911D. To me it's in beautiful condition. But I don't know coins. Any info would be nice.
I doubt it's in good enough condition to be worth $200k. Here's the example that probably led that person to tell you that; http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=422&Lot_No=3174
Sorry. Would if I knew how. Coin and computer retarded here. I'll try to figure it out. Could take day or two.
No. You are correct. An Eagle is $10 so a Half Eagle is $5. To warrant a $200k price tag your coin would have to grade MS-65 or higher. It is highly unlikely your coin would grade that high. In any MS grade it is still worth several thousand dollars. Please post good, clear photos of both sides.
There is a thread here to help you with that process: How To Post (upload) Photos Claiming ignorance in the digital era still will not yield you the answers you came here seeking. We simply need pics to help you and you need to learn how this works to get them, here. Once you have figured it out please post photos in this thread. In future, if you have a piece that you have a question about, remember to post photos at the time you ask the question, it is much more efficient and answers can be determined much more expediently. There are many here who can help you with all of these things. For posting photos, consider registering a free account with Photobucket.com. They allow a lot of free storage space, have Apps for mobile devices and remote uploads and are the server of choice for many on CT posting images.
Another bit of advice - don't do anything to the coin. Don't clean it. Don't handle it. Don't do anything to damage the coin. A small drop in grade may result in a HUGE reduction in value.
Too late. Took it out of folder for pics. I've never had it out. It doesn't look near as nice. I'll try to get pics on now.
Is there a difference in color and appearance at the "TE" of staTEs ? The reason I ask is that it is at the top of the coin, and if it has more of a silverish color, it might be remnants of solder if the coin was once a jewelry piece. It also could be just the light angle, I couldn't tell. Welcome to the forum! Jim
