I just picked up an 1879-S slabbed at MS-64 in an older 2003 ANACS 5.1 (i think) slab for half of the red book value. I was going to send it off to PCGS or just have ANACS update the slab... First off, is it a good idea to do so? And second question would be any chance that it would possiably get a MS-65 grade? Thanks for the help! Here's some pics:
Would say just update the holder chances are your grade would be reduced if yo submitted it To either PCGS or NGC
From those pics, yes, I think it will definitely cross at 64. I also think it has a chance at 65, but the TPGs are pretty tough on the '79-S (and rightfully so). No chance at PL or DMPL, it's a little frosty (which is very common for the early S Morgans), but no reflectivity in the fields. As for sending it off to PCGS, imo, it's just not worth it, because, the price doesn't jump much from 64 to 65, and the grading fees would eat up most of the profit (plus there's always the chance it doesn't make 65, then you're out the grading fees). I wouldn't send it off to ANACS either, imo, you're better off with a 64 in the old white holder, than a 65 in the new orange/yellow holder (considering the fees).
Looks like a nice 64 to me and yes, it should cross at 64 but is not a 65 in my book. Old ANACS holdered coins are usually graded accurately and often cross at PCGS and NGC. Since you got a good price on it, why cross or re-slab? You'll likely have more money in it, after a new slab, than the coin's worth.
