1997 Liberia World's Greatest Conquerors mix up

Discussion in 'World Coins' started by Log Potato, Jan 7, 2011.

  1. So I was scanning my 2011 Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 for neat and interesting coins I have never seen. I came across the Liberia series above. I love the concept and designs of the coins in the book and I think it's a series I would like to own. I noticed though, Krause has them listed as $10 and the obverses plainly show $20. I was just wondering if the KM#s would be the same no matter what denomination they were? Just thought it was interesting.:)

  3. Although, I just noticed they were minted at the Franklin Mint. Excluding their bullion value, are they even worth the premium being from the Franklin Mint.

sorry but these a part of my pet hate in coin production, coun tries like liberia, sierra leone, somalia, palau, isle of man etc etc produce so much so called collectors coins every year which are non circulating legal tender with themes ranging from motorbike shaped coins to guitar shaped coins and cartoon charachter coins that they make our hobby a laughing stock. give me a genuine circulating coin anytime over this crap.

Basically agreed; those countries "authorize" many issues that some major coin dealer/distributor proposes. The country/government profits, the distributor profits, and the collector ... is faced with a plethora of "pseudo" coins. Sure, if anybody finds a particular theme or design interesting, why not buy the coin(s) no matter where they are from? But they should be aware of the fact that hardly any of these issues become "more valuable" later.

FWIW, the catalog that I have lists those "Conquerors" coins as $20 issues only; no $10 pieces. In the same year, by the way, Liberia also issued a "25 Years Standard Catalog of World Coins" coin. :)

  7. This is what I figured. Once I saw they were from FM, kind of took all the excitement away. Oh well, back to my 7070 type set. Thanks for all the replys.

Yeah I hear that.... However the proofs that the Franklin Mint struck for various countries in the 1970's are truly some beautiful, and very well made proof coins, if that is your thing.
But I agree with most of what the rest of you guys said on the issue of these non-circulating coins.... like moneyer12 said, I would much prefer a 'real' circulating coin in most cases.

Moneyer12: Awesome cartwheel 2pence in your 'modern era coins' thing. I have added some of my George III and other British coins to my 'modern era coins' thing.

  13. Well, if silver drops to $10 an ounce again, I'll consider them.
Is a shame though, I would have went after them if it wasn't for FM. I really like the designs. By the way, the Numismaster link above also lists them as $10 denominations as well.

Apparently they were issued as $10 and $20 pieces - and the SCWC/Numismaster lists the $10 issues while the catalog I use (Schön) has the $20 issues. :D Here is an example of such a $20 piece from a dealer in the US: http://www.pandaamerica.com/details.asp?item=6204&grp=1&categ=23

Note the comment about the piece not being listed in the SCWC. Frankly, when it comes to coins "from" Liberia and a few others, I do not envy the authors of these catalogs ...

Right. The Franklin Mint issued a bunch of coins for a fascist dictator celebrating a bunch of villains. Sigh.

I don't have that one, very nice example though, such an interesting and historic coin... I just have the roses and plumes version myself.

love the shillings, i have them from william III up to QEII my favourites are the shield back vitoria jubilee issues.

  18. Just because I liked the designs does not mean I support a "fascist dictator" or "a bunch of villians".

Nice, those are great. I have a few shillings of George I, III and IIII and a bunch of George V and VI, and quite a few from Victoria and onward... I always liked the Maundy 3d and 4d from Charles II on through Victoria.... I always wanted a 4d of Anne, I have no coins of her at all :( someday.... someday....

Alrighty friends, I broke down and took some pics. Keep in mind that the coin itself is blast white and it's only my lighting that makes it yellow. I like it, it looks similar to an IndoChina! :D

I think Liberia would be much better off if they only made 1oz .999 silver coins and quit the idea of minting fractional type silver coins that are half oz and the lower silver content BS. Excuse me but I just had to say it. It's frustrating!! :T$:
