You should try a different bank, IMHO you should be finding silver by now.

3 boxes of halves, 1 measley 40%. Box of nickels, 13 pre-60's and no war nicks. Box of dimes and another box of halves later today.

Something interesting:

Last 8 boxes of 2010 got 97 silvers. (79-40%, 18-90%)
First 5 boxes of 2011 got 2-40%

Guess there is some truth to boxes being better around Christmas, holidays?

I've been trying to get a local auction to take some problem coins from me to put up on the block after I saw a $3 princess that was harshly cleaned go for over $2k... not even a big key date, just a semi-key.
Wow, only 12 pre-60's... I usually pull a roll per box.
1774's??? ;)
Yeah, time to switch banks, dude.
Another example of not many pre-60's... maybe the greater Philly area is relatively unsearched as far as nickels go?

In regards to the boxes around the holidays, I can't really say as I switched supplier banks in mid-November after TD Banks in PA shut off the tap, but my results with the new bank are about 10 times better. I can say my teller tray finds have jumped substantially, but I'm also working them a bit more now.

I just switched it up. My first seven boxes came from Brinks and the last two I opened came from Garda. I have one more Brinks box to go, hopefully I snap the streak on this one. Got another bank lined up for next week that orders from a different service than my other two order banks.

Got a 1956-D wheat out of 4 rolls of cents yesterday, and a 1954D nickel out of 4 rolls.

Wow, David, you had quite a nice run there at the end of 2010. Save some for the rest of us....

:)

I did a box yesterday. Skunk.

Wow thats awesome. It's funny because I've had 13 straight skunk boxes extending well back into 2010. I really haven't found anything around the holidays. Even the loose coins are unavailable and the boxes have been horrible.

What region of the country are you in? I'm in the northeast and I've had the opposite results as you.

Same here partner (at least as far as halves go.) I've had more luck from teller trays.

Found more silver in my mailbox than I did roll hunting this week. Guess the lucky run is over.
Out of 6 boxes of halves this week, 2-40%. Box of nicks and box of dimes, doubleskunk.

These are some of the non-silver halfs to look for, thanks to someone who listed what is below. I know that the S series are good. I assume that not all 1976 ones are silver matte. Are there some others that maybe I should look for. Are the errors tricky to see?

Thanks collectors

1971-D - Nice DDO's are found for this year. Some are quite dramatic!
1972 - A very rare DDO exists out there that could provide more financial reward than finding 385 40% silver coins!
1972-D - The No FG (designers initials on the reverse) coin is very difficult to find and commands a very hefty premium in the open market!
1973 - A nice DDR coin can be found.
1973-D - Four DDO's are cataloged for this year/mm with one being very scarce.
1974-D - A very dramatic DDO exists for this year/m
1977-D - Two very scarce DDO's exist for this year/mm.
1980 - This year has a scarce DDO
1984 - This year has a scarce DDO

Things you like to hear when you go to the bank to ask for halves:

"Do you want the Kennedy type, or the older kind?"

Alas, it was only a tease -- no non-Kennedy's.

Things you also like to hear:

"Wow, these look different..."

...because apparently somebody emptied a Dansco and cashed some in. Two proofs, and a handful of regular circulation issues in the best condition I've ever seen. I'll see if I can get some pictures later this evening.

Oh, and two 40%, out of a total of something like $22 worth from teller trays and one drawer. I'll definitely be visiting this bank more frequently -- the tellers are apparently on our side!

I'm in my 4th day or so of coin hunting. In my first penny box I found a dime :D and a 98 Wide AM. My girlfriend pulled a couple dimes from a roll. They're offstruck, but not much. I can scan them if anyone would like to see.

WoW ! I haven't had any luck at all with any of my holiday boxes, the cents my son gave me or the extra halves I bought. I had to take yesterday and today off, it got so bad. I did pull a quantity of copper that I didn't look closely at and may do that, but otherwise I got skunked.

Over the last couple days... $65 in CWR and loose halves. One 2002. I did get 38 cents out of a coinstar bin though.

I just finished a box of dimes and I'm done with dimes for good I think. I went through two boxes and didn't find squat. I've never skunked on nickels or even pennies since I still find wheaties. Dimes are now dead to me.

jeffB- Awesome score, man! I'd make sure to stay on their good side. Cookies = WIN, lol.

Jarad46- You're a lucky dog. I found a 98 WAM in pocket change. Since then I've been through probably $500 in cents from boxes and bags and have never found another.

I agree. Now that all my clad sets are complete except for a couple Philly state quarters, I am going to stay with cents. I always find better things with cents anyway and there are a lot of errors and varieties to look for. I think most silver searchers think cents are a waste of time. That helps the rest of us by letting these go by.
