I found a coin in an old chest and i was wondering if anyone knew the value or where i the best place to sell something like this would be. my local coin shop offered me $28 scrap silver for it because he had no idea what it was. Any help?
Welcome to Coin Talk! This was the subject of a thread a few years back. Someone will be along with value information. In the meantime read: http://www.cointalk.org/t14403/ http://www.kittredgecollection.org/display/ead/d1e98386
Once you get a few more posts. You could list it in the Classified Section here on Coin Talk. There are collectors here that would be interested.
sounds good. thank you again, you have been more help to me in 15 minutes then a whole phone book of coin dealers.
i'll get back to you tomorrow on this subject it's midnight in the UK and i'm off to bed, i will check my german states catalogues tomorrow and let you know exactly what the coin is and it's worth.
is there any tell tale signs of being a fake? or do i just need to find someone who knows about the coin to tell me.
Look,s like a real good coin and from the pics in great shape to, just need to make sure It is authentic and i think you got a winner there
Most common is to see if it sticks to a magnet, also weighing it with a scale but I don't know the exact weight a Thaler should weigh. Do a search on vcoins.com for Thaler and see what the sellers offer. There is slot of types but I think yours is kinda common.
im sorry. but the image is not the coin i have personally, i found an image of it on google. but it is the same coin, its in good condition except it has some patina.
Here, I found this. Maybe you've seen it already but if not its the best I can do. Even has a price guide, which by no means guarantees it's true value. As with all coins, they fluctuate. http://www.allnumis.com/coin/german-states/thaler-1603-maximilian-iii-13255
There is this site as well, on the left hand column, there are different grades that sold: http://www.mcsearch.info/search.html?search=similar:165373&view_mode=1#0
