Hi everyone....first time poster here. My wife and I are totally new to gold/silver and are looking to make our first precious metal purchase. There is a private seller in our area who has 20- 1oz apmex silver rounds for sale.... I guess I am looking for any wisdom or advice that is appropriate. My main concern is how do I know they are real ? Do people normally perform tests, or weigh each coin when purchasing? Any input at all would be helpful, thanks! Mike
I have never heard of an Apmex silver round being counterfeited. If you were that worried, an easy specific gravity test could be performed. The above said, why not just by direct from Apmex? Are you getting that good of a deal?
The biggest question is are you looking at it as a potential investment, or as a hobby? That makes a huge difference in answers to your question. Guy
The gravity test, I assume, would be dropping the round and hearing the "silver" sound. You could always weigh it I suppose. But if you're buying silver, I recommend going for the American Silver Eagles.
Mike: Welcome to CT! Take a look at the Bullion Investing forum on this site. As far as your question goes, I prefer American Silver Eagles over generic rounds. However, for investment purposes only, silver is silver so if you want to buy the generic Apmex rounds, see if you can get them at a discount of spot (perhaps at the Apmex buyback price and not what they are selling them for): http://www.apmex.com/Product/27024/1_oz_APMEX_999_Fine_Silver_Rounds_.aspx TC

thanks for all the input guys...I'll check out the site before purchasing and also look into the eagles!
Shipping would seem to me to be a very good price for the assurance of getting the real thing. Maybe that's just me though.
