OK, I hope someone has a trick that I'm just not aware of. I picked up some folders & a few rolls of nickels & pennies for my son to start filling. He's having a blast working on it this afternoon (as I type) but we're BOTH having a hard time getting those darn coins to pop into the holes! Man, I don't remember them being this difficult when I was a kid filling folders with my Dad. Any suggestions? I'm about ready to get out the meat tenderizer mallot
Use white cotton gloves to handle the coins and use a little force to insert them. Personally, I have opened many a folder and had numerous coins spill out on the table. I would rather have then go in and stay in then fall out later!
Howdy You can use a tart press...it's wood and won't harm the coins...your meat hammer might work the best if you don't mind a few marks on your coins --JUST KIDDING Speedy PS If your are talking about US cents then you made one error..they are not pennies they are CENTS!!
Put one edge into the hole first, then press on the other edge. Sometimes I would use a pencil with a nice big, soft, new eraser to push with.
There is a much easier trick to getting coins into albums than beating on them with a hammer - wooden or otherwise. For BU coins - the cotton gloves are a must. Then place the folder or album page on top of an ordinary bath towel. Then just press the coin into the hole. You'll be surprised how easy it is You see - the soft surface under the album page allows the cardboard to flex slightly and this allows the coin to slip into the hole much more easily.
I have not put a coin into this style folder in many years, but when I did, I always had trouble unless I set the folder on an extremely hard, flat surface. When using a towel (or carpet) as the work area, I would crack or crease the cardboard of the folder. Maybe I shouldn't have stood on it? I guess you just need to experiment, maybe with a "test" folder and some common circulated coins.
Some of these new folders are very tough. You can always just put an old worn example in the hole for a while. But this may not be as effective with the smaller denominations since it's tough to find coins sufficiently worn to fit.
