Thinking about bidding on this coin, but not sure it would be worth the price unless it grades at MS-64 DMPL... I'm probably making a mistake by posting this but what the heck... http://cgi.ebay.com/1891-S-SLABBED-...10?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item1e60b6cf96 Let me know what you think here in the next 2 or 3 hours (it closes in 4 hrs.) please! Thanks for the help!
Nahh man.. I'm thinking you should pass it up. Figure this; right now the minimum bid is 1800, which already is 300 over Red Book in MS65. Not only that, it's in an ACG holder and by the looks of it is probably more on par with an NGC/PCGS 63. I'm not familiar with the DMPL grade with respect to values, but do you think it really adds that much value? I'm more asking than telling... Either way, I'm not sure this is something worth trying to flip. Just my 2 cents
According to the grey sheet from CDN dated 12-3-10 an 1891-S in DMPL is as follows: MS-63 DMPL $320 MS-64 DMPL $3,150 MS-65 DMPL $19,300 My concern is that ACG may be pretty close to accurate on the grade, but the face has some rough contact marks. Bad pics for the most part, but i was hoping to maybe capitalize on that fact. I think it's atleast an MS-63 and maybe MS-64, but the price difference is pretty steep...
My guess is genuine. It looks to be corroded on the reverse. If not, there is at least something going on on the top reverse.
I'm not a Morgan guy, but there is no kinda way that I would pay GEM money for that coin, especially when the difference between a 65 and lower grades is so huge. It sure ain't a 65 DMPL.
I dont doubt it's genuine, or i would stay away all together... But i dont believe it's a MS-65 either.
Not sure i see the corrosion you do... I see a a blurry spot on the top, but i think its the holder or reflection of the coin. The last picture is a better shot of the top.
Here's the way I look at it; there are enough Morgan experts out there constanly searching Ebay that if one of them even thought it had a chance at 65 DMPL with a definite 64 they would have jumped all over it.
The question I would have is: Will it grade DMPL at NGC or PCGS? No way to tell from those images though. I would have to have a 30 day money-back guarantee to bid $1800 on it. If the seller was willing to give me the 30 days, then I could consider it because it could be submitted as a cross-over with a minimum MS64DMPL grade under an express submission. If it didn't cross at MS64DMPL then you'd only be out the shipping/grading fees and not $1,800.
They are not on the holder. When he shows the different angles, the spots do not move - particularly from his last picture. I am nearly positive they are on the coin and not the slab.
It only has 26 page views, i think it might be one of those coins that is being overlooked that could be a gold mine...? I think it would grade as a DMPL, but as you said bad pictures so tough to tell but that could be a good thing. And the Return policy says 3 days, thats hardly enough time to get it out of the box... I live not far from ANACS and could drop it off and pick it up the next day or possiably the same day, but i'd hate to spend the $100 on the grading if it doesnt even grade a 63.
He doesn't mean that it's genuine as in not fake, he means come back in a genuine holder with no grade because of elemental damage. I'm gonna have to agree with everyone else, this is a risky purchase.
AHH gotcha... With the 3 day gurantee do you think i can justify a return if there is some elemental damage on the coin? Maybe i'll just contact the seller if it doesnt sell and see if he or she would be willing to sell it for less. It's really not a bad coin from what i can tell. The more i look at it the more i want it, but thats when i get myself into trouble!
I think you would probably be better off ponying up more money for a better example, you will be happier in the long run.
