How about these dealers?

I was looking in the phone book for dealers local to where I live (within a 30-40 minute drive or less). I was suprised to see quite a few. So it got me thinking, how do I know who would be "good" to deal with. Now, I understand that is pretty relative depending on what I might be looking for, what is available and my own knowledge level. But, I thought, this would be the place to throw some shop names and addresses out and see if any CoinTalk members have dealt with any of these places face to face, over the phone, or perhaps even at a show somewhere. Or if nothing else, if you are in the KC area or you are visiting, now you know where some coin shops are. Here is the list.

I was going through KC and stopped into three of these places. All I can really give you are my first impressions. House of Stuart on Lamar had lots of coins. Their gold was overpriced quite a bit IMO. Lots of slabbed Morgans and things like that though. Meierotto's Midwest Jewelry was kind of crazy. It's a big store. In the display cases I saw no coins at all. There were a lot of people in there when I went, mostly doing jewelry stuff. You had to take a number if you wanted to talk to somebody and I didn't want to wait. I also didn't really have anything in particular I was looking for. It looked to me like asking somebody to go get something specific from the safe was the only way to look at coins, so no thanks. I lastly went to Precious Metals & Gems on Metcalf. I actually liked this store. The guy I talked to was nice. They had a rather average sized inventory displayed...maybe three or four cases of coins. They didn't have anything I was looking for at the time, but a decent place nonetheless and they may have what you're looking for. At the time, they had maybe 8 or 9 slabbed coins, all the rest were raw. However, he did tell me they had 30 or 40 out getting graded at the time and were expecting them soon, if that's your kind of thing. That was maybe 2 months ago. Good luck and please let us know if you find some good places to go as I find myself in KC every once in a while.

If it were me, I would search the ANA Dealer Directory and see which ones I could find there. That should be a good place to start. ANA Dealer Directory

But it is worth remembering that not all dealers listed in the ANA Dealer Directory have a store front. They sometimes operate out of their homes, working only for a handful of people in their area. My mom's hometown (population aprox. 2000) has two dealers on the ANA listing. I've been going to that town for 34 years, and I'd never seen them before. My mom knew one of them as a guy who had sold stuff out of his house for years.
