Hello - my brother is just getting into collecting and since he has a PM focus, he wants to only collect silver coins. He is working on date set of Franklins, but wants to also now start collecting Graded PEACE dollars. Couple of questions from the experts: - Is there a preferred TPG for Peace $s? We only go NGC or PCGS. - Is collecting MS63 and above for all but the '34 a doable venture? He has a good budget and lots of time. Thanks in advance!
I am of no assitance but just stopping by for a couple things. 1 BUMP I hope you find what your looking for. 2 I am also very interested in the responses b/c the Peace Dollar is my favorite coin, yet I havent aquired any just yet. Someday I will have a set! I just love the way the coin looks and everything about it, Anthony did a good job designing it IMO. I wish your brother the best of luck HAPPY NEW YR ASWELL C:
Having a good budget and lots of time are key. Since your brother has both, that's half the battle. I put a complete set together that I am very proud of, and it is beautiful. When I did mine, I went MS64 - 65 on the lower end coins and down to AU58 - BU on the more expensive ones. I had alot of trouble finding a 25 S and a 27 that I really liked. Why, I don't know. I consulted with a doctor in MT. Shasta, CA who is a Peace Dollar expert and he was of great help to me. I like NGC, PCGS only also. PCGS coins will cost a little more. A Peace Dollar set in MS63 will make $7,500.00 look real sick. That's not counting the 34 S in MS63 which is around $3,000 by itself. So we're talking 10 Grand. But, with the budget, time and patience it is very doable. Sounds FUN and EXCITING to me! I wish him the best of luck! When he gets that set complete, he will really have something.
I attempted to complete a set of Peace Dollars a few years ago in MS63+. Due to the rarity of rainbow toned Peace Dollars, my goal was simply to choose eye appealing examples mixing both brilliant and toned coins in the same collection. While there are some key dates like the 1934-S and 1938, they are available if you have the funds. The stopper for me was finding attractive lustrous examples for the coins not included in the common dates. I have not added a coin to this collection in well over a year and it may come time for be to abandon the venture. I think that both NGC and PCGS grade Peace Dollars in a very similar standard. I think your brother will find this series interesting and rewarding if he pursues it.
I love toned coins also and they make up a very large portion of what I collect. These Peace Dollars Lehigh96 posted are absolutely gorgeous! Very impressive!
I have started such a set, but am willing to go to AU for the keys & semikeys (due to budget constraints). So far I have 11 of the 24. NGC registry link is below http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=108638 I like peace dollars because a full set is doable. Good Luck!
If PM's is his focus then I don't really see the need for graded coins, but that's his choice. I was collecting Peace Dollars for awhile until I needed to start selling them. You can find some nice MS63's and 64's graded by ANACS as well and they look great in the small old slabs!!
Right now the coin vault tv show has a complete peace dollar set in PCGS MS-64 for $25,000, but only one set... Even though thats $18,885 in red book value... Good luck on the venture, should be fun!
I am doing a peace set myself raw as well as graded. The raw set is almost done need that 34s a good au will do their but the graded set is a little harded to do my dealer freinds say not many were graded like morgans the s mints are the toughest since they were used in vegas so finding them has been a chore ms63 or above.Tell him to take his time and look around their out just have to find them
