I always thought this was a bit cool looking. Gave about a dollar for it years ago.
Wondering if anyone knows what the stamp stands or?

Larry, that's a nice piece and for a buck a great pick up.

BRandM (Bruce) knows a lot about counter stamped coins and may be able to help you.

Also check through the list of counter stamps on this site.

I can't recall ever seeing this one before Larry, but there are J.O.P. and J.P. initial stamps listed in Brunk's reference. This is surely a person's initials, and may have been carried around as a pocket piece for years. The stamp looks to be about as worn as the coin, so it was probably struck about the time the Large Cent started to circulate. Sorry I can't help you identify it, but I'll send a pic to Brunk so he can add it to his database. He may have seen this before, you never know. Nice pickup.

Just like those conspiracy theories, but...:
100 years after the 1844 dated coin is 1944.
In 1944, the Japanese began bombing.
    JAP: Japanese?

    Hey, you never know...

"Yesterday, December 7, 1941; a date that will live in infamy... or was that 1844?"

Actually, that was my mother's 6th birthday and her story about the trauma of everyone coming to her birthday party crying is a family legend.

If it was short for Japanese I would not expect it to have a period after each letter.
