Am thinking this is a Commemorative coin. I did not get a picture of the entire black leather(ish) holder it is in, but here are the pictures I did get.

It is not a commemorative coin. It is a common 1879-S Morgan that has been colorized, probably after a good polishing, and it is worth only melt value - about $24

I don't understand why people do this to coins...

I can assure you it was probably chemically treated to get that appearance.

Not sure about chemically treated (but then again, I know LITTLE about coins other than how to spend them). Will take a better look at it tonight and maybe try to get better pictures.
    THANKS

I would agree that it's a genuine 1879-S Morgan that's been painted. The cameo effect on the obverse was also painted on.

I know most people agree that this is a terrible thing to do to a coin. However, I do have some canadian quarters that were colorized by the mint, and I really like them. I also like some of the modern Jefferson nickels (the bison, ocean view, etc.. and quarters that are painted.

I know..I know.. not collectible, but I think it is neat to see.
