I decided that since I've heard from many of you that gold is hard to grade, that I would post pictures of the latest addition to my collection. It is an 1896 Eagle graded by NGC. I am very proud of it and really like it a lot! Anybody care to venture a guess on the grade?
MS63PQ....at first I thought the hair might have some wear but I think its the lighting in the photo... Speedy
I am curious as to what others may grade this at. My guess would be ms-61. Its hard to tell without a close up pic. CLAW
Gold I won't venture a guess, but I am curios of the grade to compare to my unslabbed gold to give me a better idea of my grades.
Gold grade well.......assuming there is no wear I hope it goes 63 or 64. I would like to see a closer pic to see some strike details on the coronet and the hairlines. Very nice coin, I just love the look of the older gold coins....a definite keeper.:hail:
Hi all! Thanks for taking time, looking at my coin and guessing on the grade. You all have made me quite happy! NGC graded this coin MS 61. I wanted to buy a $10 Liberty gold piece for a while for my Liberty denomination set. I was patient and tried to pick one that I thought was really nice for the grade. I think that the reason NGC graded it MS 61 is because of the abundance of hairlines and scuffs. The small hairlines and scuffs is the exact reason that I picked this coin. I wanted a coin that had no large detracting marks on it, but I was okay with having many smaller ones. This to me helps give the coin better eye appeal as there's not a "sore thumb" that sticks out on it. It also has great luster which may or may not be evident from the images. I think that NGC's MS 61 grade is okay, but I could have maybe gone MS 62 on it also (but then I wouldn't have gotten as good of a deal on it ). I can tell you that I've definitely seen coins that aren't this nice in 62 holders. Well thanks again for looking and I hope that this was fun for everybody to get a shot at grading gold. It's definitely a tough task and also one that I by no means am an expert at, but I'm getting a little better all the time.
