Hello everybody,,, i'm new in the forum but i collect U.S. since 3 years. i know that most of the people collect their coins since maybe 10,15 or 20 years but i do not have a big, big account in my bank. i forgot to say that i'm french from Paris in France and to collect U.S. in Paris is more difficult if i compare your large choice from newspapers, coin dealers and others meaning to collect. about me, i try to collect from Ebay and from a couple of friend and parents in your beautiful country. but by the way, my fist question will be easy, i would like to find a good company where my coins will be certify with a good certification. i thought about the PCGS certification from their club, the NGS from their club too or by the ANACS company. if i say there 3 only companies it's because i think that they are the best ( for me!!!) but also because i like their slab. about their grade, i think that they are fair and sometimes very hard with appréciation but like i say, when you love you pay the price!!! i note that i have several difficulties to undestand their submission form when you are outside the USA about the fees, the insurance, the invoice of the coins...etc so if somebody had the time to help me about my future choice, it will be very nice. i precise that i collect the Morgan (44 coins...) the Franklin (22 coins...) the one cent Lincoln (62 coins...) the Kennedy half doller (33 coins...) the eagle dollar (5 coins...) thank you a lot for everything take care and God Bless nicholas:goof:
Ok..... We need the date and mintmark on each coin and the grade also.... You see...most Franklin Halfs are only worth $3-$5 each...when you pay $25-$25 for grading and slabing...its not worth it....but there are a few in high grades that are worth $$$.... Its the same with...Morgans...Kennedys....Lincoln Cents...and Silver Eagles... Speedy
for the fist lot of morgan 1882 o/s MS-60/62 1896 MS-63 1884 MS-64 1879 MS-64/65 1921 MS-64 1921-D MS-64 1889MS-64 1921-D MS-64 1921-P MS 64 for the lincoln cent : 1939 MS-67 RED 1942 MS-67 RED 1956 MS-67 RED 1954-S MS-67 RED 1971-S PR69 DEEPCAMEO 1971-S MS-67 for the Franklin : 1957-D MS-63 1958-D MS-64 1958 MS-64 1952-D MS-64 for the Kennedy : 1966-P MS 70 1993-D MS-70 1994-S DEEP CAMEO PR-70 1982-S PROOF-70 1979-D MS-70 1984-D MS-70 1987-P MS-70 1978-D MS-70 1977-D PROOF-70 1967 MS-70 and for the rest i'm waiting to receive them see you soon nicholas
One Question....are these in holders marked MS70 or Proof70.....if so what name brand is the holder??...SGS maybe? You see....MS or Proof 70 is a high grade...and they would be worth lots of money IF they are a true MS or PF 70....there are lots of people that just mark their coins that high and and sell them and rip off new collectors. If you can post a photo of one of these coins it would help alot! Speedy
Er... almost every dollar coin ever minted in the US has an eagle on it, lol... which specifically do you mean?
About the Kennedy with the MS-70 and the PROOF 70 they are from SGS company, that's why i thought to send them to NGS or PCGS to recapsule and give the true grade value. for the others coins in the list, there are from NTC, and most from PCI. I do not know for their companies if they are good or not but what i know ( i think...) is that's NGC or PCGS must give me, maybe, a better grade value. and that's why i do not really like the SGS holders, too gold...but it's just the holder because when you see the coins , it seem proof and dark cameo....but i'm not a professional just 3 years hold with my coin collection. i think that's if i send to NGS, the Kennedy will MS-69 or PROOF -69 ( i hope...). i will send some of the picture and you will say what do you think. That's why i hesitate for a long, very long time to decide to buy some coins from SGS but maybe it's a good deal, you buy some of them and you send to NGS to regrade the value. For the others morgan that i have in my PCGS boxes, they are from ANACS( because i like the holder) and from PCGS. also i try to collect the morgan with ANACS holder with some VAM and also those who are low grade like EF-40, AU55/58. i know, that's is not really interesting because their grade value are poor but for them, it's not the value, it's just the different tone and aspect of the coin.. i hope that you will give me sone responce about everything i wrote and also your thinking about SGS. take care and God Bless nicholas
By the way, i know that what i will ask will be "bizarre" in the forum (i hope that i do not make a mistake to put what i will ask) but if someone have the possibility to have the latest issues from the different coins magazine (coins, numismaticnews, coinworld, coin value...etc) and to send to me it will be very nice because in Paris, i do not have the possibility to buy them and of course i will pay the magazine and also the shipping!!!! the only magazine dates from last december 2004 ( when i was on vacation in the U.S.A. in New York), and i continually update my listing with the PCGS price guide, but except the PCGS price guide, i do not know the news from coin world and specially from the US. if i done something wrong with this message, i hope that all my apologize will be taken in consideration and also think that it is for a person who try to collect with what he have in france, i mean nothing when you talk about U.S. coins!!!!! and i do not talk about the shipping when you go to the web site of their magazine to subscribe, it's amazing!!!!! so thank you a lot and all my apologize if my message was "bizarre". nicholas
Well the coins in SGS slabs won't be anywhere near the grade they say...maybe at the best MS63 or MS64 and the Proofs....PF63 or 64..... So from the list...you aren't going to want to send them to NGC or PCGS or ANACS...it would cost you more than the coins are worth...sorry to have to be the one to tell you this---but I want to tell you the truth. If you still want to buy more coins stay with NGC/PCGS/ANACS/ICG....never ever buy any other slab untill you know how to grade. One other thing....never ever go by the PCGS price guide...they are way high....go by ended online auctions... Speedy
this is what i thought and that's why i waited a very long time before buying some of them. lol. About the PCGS price guide, this is what isay before, i have only this meaning to know the value and that's why i ask someone generous to help me about magazines. what do you think about the PCI certification ot NTC.... because most of my coins came with a PCGS slab, but i have also a lot of NTC and PCI too. but my preference come with ANACS,NGS and of course PCGS. see you soon nicholas
Well about the price guides....if you read what I suggested you will see that it is free...and anyone can get it around the world. Go to ebay...Heritage Coin Auctions and to ended auction serches--it will pay off in the end if you research and learn about the coin before you buy it....the old saying is....Buy the book BEFORE you buy the coin. PCI and NTC will over grade too on most cases...but sometimes they are ok. What do you mean...most of your coins came with PCGS slabs??...does that mean that you have coins graded by PCGS?? I've never heard of NGS but maybe you meant NGC.... Hope this helps....serach the forum here for SGS...I think you will see lots! Speedy
What do you mean...most of your coins came with PCGS slabs??...does that mean that you have coins graded by PCGS?? i mean that i have several morgan certified by the PCGS service of certification. i bought them when i came in the only one convention i saw in my life and of course it was in California!!!!! i mean in your country and not mine!!!!
I've never heard of NGS but maybe you meant NGC.... yeah, i made a mistake, i wanted to say NGC...hihihihihi
i just bought on ebay 3 certified ANACS Morgan Dollar : 1879 ef40, 1921 au58, 1921 au55. there are those kind of little grade value i meant before when i wrote that i like the VAM serie and others grade like ef40 au58 au55. i saw the grade value and i think that i done a good deal : almost $10 each. i precise that it is not for the grade value because i like the tone of their three coins.
ngohin1, I think you did pretty good with your new Morgans you bought off of e-bay...as long as you don't have to pay too much for shipping. If you like them, collect whatever you want to. Heck, even to get those coins that you bought graded costs more than $10US each!
Might I suggest alittle learning before buying....there are some good books on Morgan dollars and Grading that every collector needs to read....look for the Morgan Dollar book by Q. D. Bowers....I know that it sounds mean but you are more likely to lose money by NOT reading first and just buying than you would to hold off and buy the books and THEN buy the coins. Speedy
if you speak about the official red book of the Morgan Silver Dollar, i got it and most paragraphs read them already . i appreciate the article about which one to collect, by date, by mint state ...that's why i hope to collect some of the VAM i like. but i do not finish all the book yet because i read and read again each paragraph to undestand what detail i forgot in my research but for instance, this is the best book i found and read in the coin show, but i have also the red book for U.S. coins who is pretty good too. i like the paragraph where the author said where to find your morgan by the net, by the coins show or the coins dealer but it must be difficult for me, that's why i have just Ebay to find my morgan or some friend in the U.S.
Nicholas - About the magazines, did you know that you can get them on your computer ? You can buy a subscription and read the entire magazine right on your computer every week as the new editions come out. You can sign up for Numismatic News - CLICK HERE You can sign up for Coin World - CLICK HERE By doing this you don't have to pay the shipping cost to Paris. But if you prefer to have the paper editions - you can still buy a subscription amd they will mail them right to your door. But it is rather expensive that way.
