Maybe things are different at Wells Fargo. I have been buying up halves for quite a while at many banks that I don't have an account at. Most are happy to sell them to me. I found out from my bank that they can only turn in to the Fed coins in $1000 bags or boxes. I am actually doing these banks a favor by buying them up. I actually once had a branch mananger from a bank I don't have an account at call all over town asking what banks had halves on hand.

Banks just rip people off. They trick you into thinking you should have to pay for something that should be free. They make billions of dollars a year and pay practically no interest and charge crazy fees. I have found a legal way to make money off them. I guess I'm a bad person for finding a way to make money - oh wait isn't that the American way?

I realize they are in business to make money but as I stated in a previous post; I was new in town, didn't know I couldn't as a non account holder and due to their rudeness I was striking them from my list of banks to become a customer and this didn't seem to make a difference.

The other banks in town are happy to get rid of halves. I now bank with one of them due not only to their cordiallity but most importantly to their financial assets but having them being friendly to a potential customer was a plus!

One bank was super-friendly with me while I was asking for halves and I now have an account there and may very well move all of my other business over there once I start my new job.

Being friendly to your customers is never a bad idea.

"You want to exchange your paper money in hopes of finding 40% or even 90% silver in rolls or bags? Please, step into our vault and I will assist you." SLAM (under breath, "Little buggers, that'll teach them to come to this Free Will bank."

    50, you said:

    Reverse this logic....

Roll searchers just rip people off. They trick you into thinking you should have to give them silver bullion and collectible coins for free. They make profit and pay practically nothing unless their rolls come up short. I have found a legal way to avoid them. I tell them I can't serve them "due to Homeland Security" or that they must be PAYING customers. I guess I'm a bad person for finding a way to get rid of them and not waste our time- oh wait isn't that the American way?

I could care less what takes place... I just have a difficult time feeling bad for any of you roll hounds. You guys can be ruthless, and most of the time, never offer any fine chocolate.

I have bought donuts many times for the tellers at my branch. They have ordered many thousands of dollars of coins for me and they save stuff. They know I'm picking silver but they can't afford to pick it themselves because of the cheap wages they are paid. Bank CEO's make millions while paying tellers who have to stand on their feet all day and touch germ infested cocaine laced money all day for $10 an hour. I am ruthless to banks but not to the people on the line. "I want the last check I write to bounce!"

Sorry. I know there are people who hate their jobs and react badly to customers. I have been really fortunate in that the tellers take time to chat with the "old man" share a part of their day and have been really nice about finding rolls and taking mine in return. It's hard to tell what motivates some people for a fact.

Haha this is gold. I went half-searching for the first time in a while yesterday. My two nearby banks (HSBC and Trustco) just had some loose, though HSBC told me they have a teller who keeps a lot on hand (she's out this week).

I then went to another Trustco branch maybe 5 miles away, the girl went right to the vault, didn't even ask if I had an account (though I do). I'll be dumping my Trustco finds and the further HSBC since I rarely go to that branch. There is a large, well-known Credit Union in the area that outright (but politely) refuses to help non-members, but I may open a Free Checking account there soon.

If a bank is relatively empty, and the non-customer has "wasted" the teller's time asking, may as well give the customer what he asked for, and then request that they have an account for future transactions.
