The following two UNC farthing tokens arrived today - purchased from the remainders list from the Davisson's mail bid auction #19.

Cheshire Macclesfield #87 - made by John Westwood for collectors based on the genuine trade tokens issued by Charles Roe.

South Wales #26a - a nice R&B token ex. Wayne Anderson (my first from his collection)

Lovely Warwick 269 Yarm! The depth perspective is great in that design...I love it!
Farthing, that's a very interesting token with the bowl and grapes...I hope you will post more photos of that one.

Here's a new acquisition, a Conder Token from the National Series,
generally medals or medalets and struck for collectors.

This is Middlesex DH 948, dated 1788. This gilt token has been graded MS-62 by NGC,
though I would not grade it so highly, considering a good deal of rub and somelight wear
that seems obvious to me. This isn't my first time for such an 'inconsistency.'

I do like it a lot, and valued it enough to keep it and pay a retail UNC price. It's a raw coin now, again,
and I received some 'provenance' from two friends, one a dealer, one a collector.

That's great, and that's how I found out a bit about its past.

During my research, I also found out that the term 'gilt' applies to coatings of gold or brass.
Gilt tokens make it easier to determine wear, imho, because the metal of the planchet
begins to show through on high points of legends and devices, and in this case, near the scalloped edge.

That's a beauty. Anyone else appreciate the irony of the Ipswitch Hoard being discovered under Conder's doorstep after his death?

So, I was inspired to dive in...

After reading this thread, I was inspired to pick up a few Conder tokens of my own over the weekend. I'm still learning about these, so I would appreciate your help in finding the catalog numbers / more information on these pieces.

I found 3 druids that wanted to come home with me...
    First, a 1788 Halfpenny:

    A 1791 halfpenny:

& a 1788 halfpenny that seems to be smaller (maybe a farthing):
    Token - Conder Token - 1788 Druid Penny.jpg

I accidentally scanned the obverse of the halfpenny's twice, but I can rescan the reverses if they're needful for making an ID (all 3 seem to have about the same design).

It will be difficult to attribute these tokens without additional information. I'd need to see both sides and frankly, lower grade tokens make identification more difficult, but I would be willing to try. : )

Show us both sides and carefully examine the edge to see it it is lettered, milled, engrailed, plain, etc. Then post your additiional information.

Yes, the smaller token is likely a farthing, unusual for the Druid design, though perhaps not rare.

Won 2 tokens yesterday from the DNW online auction.

    Warwickshire Birmingham D&H #53 - a R token

The second is a Worcestershire Dudley D&H #8b - a RR edge of a scarce token.
The Spence shepherd image is one of my very favorite Conder token designs.

Isaac Swainson, proprietor of Velnos' Vegetable Syrup, commissioned a token for his business
but the order was cancelled (per D&H) due to the misspelling of his name.

DNW is Dix Noonan Webb - a London auction house. http://www.dnw.co.uk

They do both traditional auctions and "desktop" auctions where the bidding is only done online. They have only done a few desktop auctions, usually every 2-3 months or so.

Yarm - that is a to die for token! So very rare and I love the reverse on this token - it appears to be totally hammered.

Farthing - I love how the dentils overlap the date on your shepard piece. Very cool!

Yarm - as usual, you possess some stunning pieces. Isaac must have been a big man given how large his head and neck appear.

I've not added to my small collection in a long time due to wanting to spend $ on building my basic U.S. type set. While that will consume my lifetime, I will likely not buy anymore tokens due to the rising market values and the virtually limitless varieties to collect (no ending point in sight - a strength or a weakness depending upon your point of view). This is not to say that Conders don't continue to fascinate me, but one's dollars can only be stretched so far!

But, let's keep our thread going - between Larry and Yarm, this thread will never end given the size of their collections!

That coin rocks! I love it!

  19. hiho

hiho off to work we go

I just picked up two new Pidcock's Exhibition (London) farthing tokens, a D&H 1072 and a 1073. The 72 is an absolute beauty while the 73 is a little worn.
I'm still very happy to be able to add both to my set. (There is also a 1066 on the horizon but I refuse to count my chickens before they are hatched!)

Once I get some free time (it seems all I do these days is work and shovel snow) I will photograph these and post the pix here.

Farthing - I really like your Spence shepherd/Dudley token, the reverse is fantastic!

Okay, got the backs of those scanned. Let's try this again:

    Token - Conder Token - 1788 Druid Penny 01.jpg Token - Conder Token - 1788 Druid Penny 02.jpg

Any help identifying these would be appreciated. I'll check rim inscriptions tonight.
