UK's Royal Mint is selling some NCLT (Non-Circulating Legal Tender) coins, including a gold five pounds coin, to commemorate the engagement between Prince William and Catherine (Kate) Middleton. The coins are issued under the name of the island of Alderney, one of the Channel Islands. Some people do not like the design and have been complaining. The gold coin was shown on this morning's American NBC television show "Today". The news woman did make an interesting observation, that some of these coins will be around in 200 years and people then are going to know what Kate looked like solely from the coins. I like the double portrait but that rendering is a dud of a design. "The news woman did make an interesting observation, that some of these coins will be around in 200 years and people then are going to know what Kate looked like solely from the coins." That comment is puzzling. Did she mean that to sound like in 200 years time we will have lost all photographic record and have no actual representative means for visualizing these people in the future?
I think the royal mint has done better with the engagement and wedding designs. This design is terrible compared to that of Charles and Diana. It just looks too unlike them in my opinion. Here is a link to the Charles and Diana commem: http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRiUwNKgNlUq3PHjPQanUoyXx4nkx9kRi1oT3KR07ocWv9qxbeX
**Echo** Horrendous representations of William and Kate. I agree they should go more the direction of Charles and Diana. Then again, I think it is ridiculous to commemorate their engagement. I guess if they break up these coins are gonna be worth a fortune. I say wait till the wedding and then make good coins. Quit trying to be like the US Mint, they are pros at bad design.
She is gorgeous, and the coin makes her look terrible, I think. And it is kind of silly to commemorate their engagement. I realized after my post that the C and D commem is from the wedding...are Will and Kate going to get a royal wedding coin too? Talk about cranking them out....
I think shes a very pretty women but the coin does her no justice. I think it's horrible. William looks "ok" but could be better too. I think a coin in general is silly in general but some people just love royal anything :/
Exactly and im probably the minority but I got to dislike her cause she was in the news, magazines and everything else so damn much. I really dont get the fascination with the royals.
The Royal Mint has many years of experience making ugly royals look presentable. Taking attractive ones and beating them with the ugly stick is their way of finding balance.
I'm still waiting for my invite to arrive. We are cousins after all, 11th cousins once removed that is....and i never get invited to ANYTHING!! :} :} :}
Absolutely silly. Do we know from coins only what, for example, Napoleon Bonaparte looked like? And somebody who works in audiovisual media may have heard about that great invention called camera too ... As for the websites you refer to - hmm, I don't like the coin design, and the portraits are not exactly good in my opinion. But if the Shabby Mail writes about "a shame", they can't be all that bad. Another suggestion for an Alderney commemorative coin: Hugh Hefner, the twice-married founder of Playboy, is taking the plunge again. Hefner, 84, said on Saturday that he and his girlfriend Crystal Harris, 24, got engaged on Friday.
