Hello : I have been collecting PCGS Old green Holders but do not know if I should continue buying at premium prices and/or submitting for upgrade. Question do they truly have a chance for an upgrade? I know that you should not buy the holder but the coin however would like to know the real grade of these OGHs. Also I have seen on e-Bay lots of auctions now for OGH with the words "upgrade ??". Are they worth pursuing? Do they have a chance of an upgrade? Any advice will be appreciated on each below, THANKS and Happy Holidays!
I read this article today.......http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=16582 If you're "feelin' lucky" go for it. But after reading the piece I don't think you're gonna get any more value. Maybe a higher number but not more value. Unless you can cop a '66 out o' these and I don't think that's gonna happen. I'd leave 'em be......
Holly coW!!! This should be an eye opener for everyone (Hobbyst and investor) if the system is realigned to a 100 point system this could this be the beginning of the end... of course collecting would continue but not the grading....hmmm? What would it happen to the Yeoman Red book back issues and how could you determine coin annual yeild as an investor if the whole system has changed? This coul be the beginning of the collapse of the whole grading system. Thanks!! Very good article
I wouldn't pay too much attention that article as the author has his facts a bit confused. I will say this however, the premise of grade-flation that he expresses is correct. He's just got it a bit backward as to when it happened. In regard to the OP's question. Knowledgable collecors have known about the changes in grading standards for many years. So those coins in the old holders have been picked over a hundred times. As a result there are very, very few of those coins in the old holders that would get an upgrade if they were resubmitted today. Pretty much all of those that were worthy of an upgrade have already been picked out and resubmitted.
