Hi all, I found a 2005D nickel with odd crystal-like elements on it. It appears embedded in the metal not just glued to the surface. I cannot find anything online about this. Does anyone know what this is? Is it common? Thank you

Probably glue and glitter. If you soak the coin in acetone, the glitter and glue will probably lift off the coin.

That was my first thought also but I'm pretty certain I can see what looks like the metal of the nickel on top of some of the crystals (red). Many of the crystals appear to have a raised edge (blue) that also look like part of the nickel. That's why I said they looked embedded. They are also not very uniform, and I suspect manufactured glitter would be more uniform, but I really have no idea on that.

If not glitter - thoughts anyone?

Sorry, but its just a material like glitter that got stuck to the coin after it left the mint. It's not an error

You pointed out the raised edges. Coins are struck with tons of force and if you look at strike through errors, they are flush with the surface not raised. In addition, there really isn't a metallurgical compound that would form localized hexagonal platelets during ingot production or annealing for the 75Cu25Ni clad alloy

Hi Oldhoopster thank you for the feedback. I suspected as much but still confused about the area that looks like the metal of the nickel but has the hex shape. In the middle of the tree trunk - most pronounced one is the downward red arrow.
    Thank you

Clear adhesive can easily make it look like the metal overlaps. If this had been struck into the coin during the minting process, there couldn't be any raised edges -- they would've been struck flat by the die. If it was pounded into the coin after striking, (a) it would just be considered damage, and (b) you'd likely see damage on the other face of the coin.

Think about it. Tons of striking pressure is going to flatten anything flush to the surface. The fact that it's raised tells you it couldn't have been on the surface when the coin was struck.

And if any recrystalization of the alloy would have occurred (and there is nothing in the alloy that would form those platelets), it could only have occurred during the alloying or annealing (very unlikely) processes and both of those are done well before a coin is struck. There is nothing after those process steps where new compounds could form.

Striking is the last manufacturing step (except for packing and shipping) so an error isn't going to occur after that step. Go and Google struck through errors and you will easily see that the surfaces are flush with the surface (for accuracy, a huge chunk of scrap may be raised, but that's rare and the stuff on your coin isn't anywhere close to those sizes)

    Hope this helps

Everyone above is wrong. It is the debris of pine cones that the squirrels in that tree have let fall. I see it here in the forest all of the time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. LOL

ok I am humbled by all you smart numismatists. it came off with acetone. I do like the pine cone evaluation - maybe I could sell it for $15,000.00 on etsy to a squirrel lover;)
