So I'm working hard to collect every proof set from date back to 1936. I wanted to know if any of you have done this and how long it took. So far I have collected 2010 - 1951, now the prices are really starting to jump so it'll take a little longer. As soon as it's finished I'll post pictures. Also, if you collect proofs what are you collecting?
i have collected pretty much every proof and mint set since the late 50's it was one of the first things i started with. i still have most of the sets
I saw your buffalo story. Nice timeline. Kind of interesting to look back on our coin buying and collecting. Quite an evolution. But how about this old post, ehazen, how is that proof hunt going? Going after those older sets can really $et you back.
I go back to '54 and inclusive up to present day. As much as I love the proof sets I don't think I'll go after anything prior to '54. Too much 'jing' and too many other things I wanna spend that 'jing' on. '54-'62 came to me compliments of my father. I carried on from there. Included with that run was a '60 small date set. I remember to this day the excitement the old boy exhibited when he received those sets. Best of luck ehazen in your collecting endevor and please keep us posted in this thread........
I started also with proof sets and have 1955-2012. Now I would like to get mints sets 1968-2012 as I already have 1959-1964 plus the SMS sets of 65-67. I really wish I could get the entire run for 2x face, or $400, but that would take some major bargain hunting. I really just want them to fill out some dansco albums. They look so nice when full and sitting on the bookshelf. :thumb: edit: my only 1956 proof set ended up containing the type I Franklin Half (5% of mintage) and my 2nd 1964 yielded the Accented Hair Kennedy variety. I guess I've had some decent luck with the early flat packs! :hail:
When I collected US coins I had all of the original Mint Sets going back to '49 and the Proofs back to '50. The Mint Sets are fairly easy to obtain back to '54, the Proofs to '53. But in years of searching I was never able to find a '47 or '48 Mint Set, and I was only ever to find 1 example of a '41 Proof Set, but it popped up at a time when I just didn't have the cash to buy it. The '36-'41 Proof Sets are especially difficult because very few were sold by the mint as complete sets. Back then most people bought the coins individually, not as sets. I have never actually known anyone who had them all. I'm sure that over the years there must have been somebody out there who accomplished the task, but I never heard of them if there was.
The SMS 65-67 are not proof sets, and that is the question & title of this thread. I do have those, and they are uncirculated sets.
