Inbetween scanners... I don't have a reverse image. if you can just grade the Obverse that would be great.

Grade as if the reverse is problem free and is comparable to the obverse.

hard to say without the coin in hand....or seeing the back.
This is one of the times I can't offer a grade.

Clearly the obv. will be just as good as the rev.
I will give that beauty an AU-50+.
But rev. would have been helpful.

 

I disagree.....what happens if you put a coin in a Folder and then everyday you rub one side of it....or like the 1922 NO D cent...one side is weakly struck while the other side is strong...no..coins aren' t the same on both sides...that is why you always grade by the lowest side...and in this case...the REV might be tons lower or maybe just a little lower.

Based on what can be seen (without the reverse), It would be AU-50 or 53

 

So your saying that you grade both sides and take the lower of the grades?

Question:

1. Is that how PCGS & NGC grade?

2. Say you have a Barber Quarter that grades MS63 on the obverse and the reverse has a nasty 1 centimeter scratch, but otherwise would grade MS63. What would you put that coin at?

 

Yes...that is how all of the grading Co's grade.
If you have a coin and one side grades VG and the other one grades G than its a G....they used to do split grading...VG/G but that got out of hand.

And yes...if you have a barber quarter with a scratch on the back it wouldn't be MS63 IMHO....now a few things go into that....is the scratch on the open field?...can you see it at first look?....if its not too bad it might not kill the grade too bad but most of the time that is a damaged coins with a NET grade of almost never over AU.

I went with the original statement and graded it just on the obverse with the knowledge the reverse is the same condition.

Just for my edification, what is the back ground of most of you guys? Are you collectors, investors, dealers, all of the above?

 

I'm just a kid that has learned alot on this forum and other forums
I'm a collectors but I think its good to learn both ends of collecing and dealing so for the last year I have been doing more "vest pocket" dealing...its been fun and helpful.

For the most part Speedy, all the coins I have run into, usually dealer bulk type lots, have the coins staying with the same condition throughout.
So the grade is only a guess to what the reverse would be.

Carterofmars: you asked about being a collector, investor...

I'm am strictly a collector, but when I accumulate many lower grade duplicates I will try to sell those off; hopefully for my money back or a profit.

Just like Speedy, I'm just a young man-still I don't let that deture me from collecting as much as I can.

 

I agree...for the most part they are...but there is always one and I don't want to give someone the wrong grade on that one time....better to be safe than sorry.

Do you mind saying how young... just curious. I still value the advice... you can be young and still be very knowledgeable.

 

If you mean me...I'm 17....some of these guys have known me since I was 11-12....so don't ask them for any stories
