i have a coin i inherited... a golden egg penny.

i have a golden egg penny, i inherited it from my great grandfather and i am trying to find info on it. i was told it is one of like 30 or something and i was told it is to be valuable.
my grandfather bought a roll of the back in the 60's this penny is a 1967 the coin sleeve its in says "m559 cud type" and "golden goose egg"
i was also told my grandfather had all 30 of them at one point in time. he sold most of them he donated a few to the Smithsonian and he kept a few. i have 5 of these,
two have die blemishes like some worm looking likes...and the golden egg of coarse.
the other has a dark stain looking spot on back but i think it is the coins metal and not a stain. it too is a golden egg penny. anywho it has a golden egg shape on the upper left side right near the crown of Lincolns head its against the rim of the penny itself. if you know anything on these please let me know..maybe a value and maybe how many there is like it out there.. etc.... thank you...

Looks like just a cud to me. No clue on value, I'd say maybe 5-10 bucks?

 

I'd agree. It's an error but a very common error. If you do a search on EBay for CUD you will find hundreds if not thousands of similar errors.

 

i agree there are several similar like it...however according to what i do know it is a rare error cud not just typical cud...i have found some info in the past few hours showing one in Wisconsin going for 21.00 and i found another in Arkansas where these came from going for 46.00 so im trying to figure out the difference between them and why is this one better or supposed to be better than the other ones...to me its a penny i dont really care so much about..and im not selling it either way just curious if anyone here knows about it...and has heard of the golden goose egg penny.

 

It's just a fancy name he gave it, and it's not a major cud. A big one, yes, but not a major one.

I think you have answered your question. It may be worth between $26 and $41. I did not see the other 2 you mentioned on eBay completed items. Perhaps if you can direct us to pictures of the other 2 coins, we might be able to solve this mystery. People on this forum are offering free and unbiased opinions about your coin, and are not trying to buy or steal it from you. I saw many cuds on eBay, the value of $5 to $10 is probably right. There were 3 billion 1967 cents made for general use, so if they made 30 golden goose egg coins, I am sure there are others.

 

My first thought is that the low mintage (30) of this exact error only adds to it's value above a common cud IF you find a buyer that is collecting one of every cud ever documented. And only then IF there are more than 30 people collecting one of every cud ever documented. Both circumstances being true at the same time are slim.

 

I think the reason its "rare" is because his grandfather had in his possession 30 of these pennies from the exact same die with a piece missing. I think that is actually kind of rare because a mint worker would have replaced the die after the cud appeared.

 

The Smithsonian has these too?

 

This particular cud is listed in my book as LC-67-1. I hate to say it but there looks like damage (scratches?) on the reverse. I guess someone would buy it for the error on the front though, and I guess it would sell for up to $10 on Ebay.

Since we're talking about populations for error coins, I have never heard pop estimates for cuds. I believe the '30' was pulled out of thin air as a guestimate - anyone have any knowledge to back up pop estimates on error coins like this that don't often get slabbed?
