The BEP is rolling out two new "Lucky Money" products December 15th. The ONE dollar Year of the Rabbit will run $5.95 for singles and feature a 2009 San Francisco note starting with 8888. The TEN dollar Lucky Lion will run $28.88 for singles and feature a 2003 (Big Head) New York note starting with 8888. The production figures are 88,888 for the Rabbit and 8,888 for the Lion. The Year of the Tiger sold out earlier this year.
I ordered a few Year of the Rabbit's and one Lucky Lion this morning. Wonder if I have a chance at getting lower serial numbers?
I wonder what the difference between that and the Lucky Notes (starts with 3 8s) and Fortune Notes (starts with 4 8s) are?
All the Lucky Money notes that start with "Year of the...." have serial numbers that start with 8888, including Lucky Money $20 Bamboo. To my knowledge, these have all been animals,(dog,horse,goat,etc.). The exceptions are the Prosperity "168" Note, the 3-piece Lucky 8.8.8. Set, and the Lucky 777 Note. Here's some BEP trivia...the 2003 $1 Boston Lucky Money note "Year of the Monkey" has two versions, one for China, and one for Vietnam.
Do these have any real premium associated with them, or are they just a niche in the paper money collecting world? I have seen them but never put any real thought into purchasing one.
The serial number draw is random, so what they send you is what you get, but there are some instances in which "fancy" serial numbers will sell at a premium. I have recieved some that start with five 8's, and my favorite one so far is this Year of the Tiger, that sold out earlier this year. I would have loved to get the note with solid 8's.
Okay, so it's just the ones with the fancy numbers you may get that have a premium, but otherwise they're just face value then.
I got my Luckys in the mail yesterday. I'll post the serial's tonight but they were not low or fancy.
Moonshine, when did you order? I hope I get mine in time for Christmas. I have a business acquaintance I want to give one too. The last mail I received from the DC area took eight days. BEP says it has shipped, but eight days wouldn't get it here on time.
A quick update from The BEP Money Store; The Year of the Rabbit $1 Commerative is SOLD OUT . They printed 88,888 of these and were released for sale on December 15th 2010.
Thanks for the update. I posted this item and availability up on my blog. I haven't posted anything new in awhile...I need to spend some time and get some more items posted.
My Year of the Rabbit note ended up being a down ladder note...I guess I could say it's "Lucky Money"
