1901-S Barber quarter Graded Fr-2 by ANACS crossed over to PCGS, same grade [PCGS5630.02/11846522; was ANACS 2843787]
granted, it was a low grade but considering the value associated with any 1901-S, the PCGS slab added at least $100 to its value when I sold it.

Keep in mind that I said "from the photo." I was giving ANACS a little bit of the benefit of the doubt here because the PCGS and NGC coins were from more recent auctions. The first ANACS ms-66 I came to was from back in 2008. I just assumed Heritage's photography had gotten much better. Here's another PCGS ms-66 from around the same time period(2008) It seems like if we go back to '08 the luster on all the coins photographed back then left a little to be desired.

While there are examples of coins in any slab being crossed over to NGC or PCGS at the same grade, and sometimes even a better grade, what is worth noting is how often that happens.

Example - if you took 100 random coins in ANACS slabs and submitted them for a cross, I would be extremely surprised if more than 2 out of that 100 crossed at the same grade.

It's kind of like a blind squirrel finding an acorn, yeah it happens, but it sure doesn't happen very often.

Hmm, I have been thinking about crossing over one of my coins for sometime, may go ahead and do it now. Have an old ANACS 42d/horizd jefferson AU58, I always felt it was dinged for AU because it has that dull grey circulated luster, but even some fresh out of the roll jeffersons have that look, I think AU58 is a fair grade, but I think there is a chance it might hit 60. What do you guys that send in coins to cross over think about sending it in with the current slab or not?

New of course. Based on my previous comments I thought that was obvious.

If you watch some auctions very carefully, you can pickup some bargains that are in ANACS holders. As GD pointed out, there was a period where ANACS graders seriously over graded some issues. The old and well used slogan, Buy the coin, not the.....is your best rule of thumb.

Yes I thought so, but wanted to be clear. I have 8-10 old ANACS holders I might crossover some day, but I also have 1 or 2 new ANACS that I might also cross over. Just something I keep thinking about - and the 2 new ones will cross over, but one will probably be a point lower in my opinion. Of course I realize I could be wrong - as it is the coins are just fine in the holders they are in.

Of the four major grading services accepted by Teletrade and Ebay, ANACS is rated the lowest according to the CDN Certified Coin Market Indicator. Take this with a grain of salt and buy the coin not the holder.

IMO, a coin either makes the grade or it does not; who's holder its in is irrelevant. I do not discount coins because of who's holder its in. I like ANACS coins and ANACS is Americas oldest grading service. I have found their grading to be very consistent and reliable.

If you were to cross an ANACS to NGC or PCGS would you keep it in the ANACS holder or crack it out?

Yes it was, key word being was. ANACS has been sold numerous times over the years. And not only does today's company have new owners, they also have new graders and new grading standards. Not one of the previous employees works for the comapny today.

The point being that there is no comparison between the ANACS of today and the ANACS of years past. They are as different as night and day.

Two schools of thought on that, one says yes and one says no. Take your pick.

Are the small white holders with the barcode still considered old holders?
