JUST NOW! I was going through a box of pennies and found a 1928 Wheat! This is the oldest Lincoln I've got in my collection. It even looks close to mint condition. I'll post a pic with the rest of my finds when I'm done digging through the box in the roll searcher's results thread.

Did you seriously find that ancient in a roll of quarters?? Is it real? Why would someone get rid of it.

The oldest coin I'ever found at the time I found it, was 90 years old, a 1913 penny back in 2003. The oldest date I've ever found was back in the 1960's I found a 1905 Liberty nickel in change.

My oldest was a 1913 type 1 Buff 8 years ago in my cash drawer when I worked for a lumber company in Arkansas.

slamster17: Stuff like this shows up when somebody is going through stuff when a relative passes away. In the bottom of the sock drawer aapears to be a bunch of loose change. They dump it in a jar and off they go to deposit it in the deceased person's account not knowing that it isn't a bunch of common change. Years ago I was in good with a teller at a bank in Arkansas that would call me when old or odd stuff would show up. One day she gave me a call and asked if there ever was a 20 cent piece. I asked her to hold it for me and I drove at the speed of light to get to the bank. It was an 1875 S and she had some other coins for me. Two Morgans, 10 walkers, nearly a roll of SLQ's and a $20 gold certificate all at face value. I offered to pay her more than face but she couldn't accept it so I took her out for a very nice dinner.

  11. I only started while i was young, and collected what I could from pocket change. The oldest coin I found was a 1909 Lincoln cent, before I knew anything about the different kinds of 1909 Lincoln cents. I looked back about 6 years later, and turns out it was a 1909 VDB. I am glad I held on to that one :)

I think the oldest coin I have pulled from circulation was a 190X Indian head cent I found in the cash register at work a few months ago.

I really can't remember. But it seems to me that it's hard to tell what circulation finds would actually deserve merit for slipping through the cracks and what was purposely thrown into circulation by collectors so non-collectors could find them and maybe get interested in the hobby. I've heard of a lot of people doing this. Some guy in New York threw some 1909-S VDBs into circulation as a publicity stunt for the hobby a while back. Nobody knows if they were ever found.

For the most part, I could see common old cents being throw out there for people's amusement encouraging the hobby. A 20 cent piece on the other hand? Now there's a find! Wow. That was a haul. I've got to get to know some tellers!

Got a nice 1907 IHC in change yesterday at lunch -- F-VF details, I think, but some (fresh :() damage around the rim. First one I've gotten in many, many years. (I've been paying for just about everything with a card that does 1% cash back, but I'm realizing that, for small purchases, the enjoyment of checking change is worth more to me...)
