Mr. Moy's tenure as Director, has and will continue to be, the subject of much controversial discussion. The collecting community's view of his less-than-forthright handling of the non-minted 2009 ASE proof coins and the controversies regarding the 2010 America the Beautiful 5-ounce bullion coins should be a lesson to any future appointee of the President. Nonetheless, political appointees will most likely not learn from these incidents currently ongoing, the immediate past (2009) or the previous Mint debacles of 1982-1983 lack of profitable uncirculated sets or the frozen mint mark era of the mid-1960s. A new Director will mean new controversies. Coins are political instruments.
Now if they can just extract the DNA from Louis Oscar Roty or Jules Clement Chaplain or Augustus Saint-Gaudens or anyone with some artistic ability in the medallic arts and clone a new director. Chris
Too bad we can clone them Unfortunately the artist, and the Mint Director are just part of the equation. We also would need a President and a Congress with the guts to chances on our coin designs instead of being worried about special interests groups creating a fuss because Washington, or Lincoln, or Jefferson are no longer on our coins. What I would love to see is designs, like on some of the State banks , that were used way back when. I know a coin only has so much room but other countries seem to be able to fit more artistic designs on their coins why can't the US do the same?
Amen, Maybe we can see the spots go away and less issues with the proofs! IMO - The 2009 ASE mess-up was poor supplier management and part of the problem with business today is that they are afraid to stand up and take responsibility. It just makes them look worse in the long run and lose business in the process. I only bought 1 thing in 2010 from the mint, which was down from 5 or 6 from the previous 3 years.
I can only say , THANK YOU. This was long over due, and the ATB 5oz debacle was probably the nail in his coffin, as I with many others had called for his resignation at the onset of the trouble with that program. In my humble opinion, he was the worst director of our Mint in my lifetime. If I were a drinking man again, I would toast champagne .
My Oh Moy... A resignation we've been asking for a long time in the coming... Enjoy your tenure at the Franklin Mint! The only accomplishment I could applaud him for that happened on his watch was the 2009 UHR, but it's minor in light of many other things collectors have taken issue with.
I agree. His signature will replace Jay Johnson's on their Presidential Dollar capsule seals, or he'll join Alan Skantz on HSN.
Moy time was up 5 years ago I don't know how he stayed as long as he did. Blackmail? I agree! but and add a dash of Victor David Brenner
Yeah, that's not saying much. They're nice but it involved no new design features and very little thought process. Just accomplishing something that somebody else wanted to do 100 years ago. Not many political appointees are ever very qualified for any position.
Sorry, but VDB is best known for his "dead president", and I would rather see someone in the position with a penchant for allegorical themes. Men like LOR, JCC & ASG fit that mold perfectly. I realize that Congress is primarily to blame for the crap coming out of the Mint, but who would be in a better position to sway their thinking than the Director of the Mint. Chris
