I got my proof sets today and one of them had the Abe dollar knocked loose from it's slot. This is total BS. I am thinking I am not going to buy any more sets. The quality has gone way down. Money is tight for me now and I just can't see paying for poor quality.
I hate when stuff like this get's past quality control. May I suggest you contact the Mint customer Service and inform them you will be returning the set, and get a shipping label from them by e-mail. Don't be concerned, they have plenty in stock. It's frustrating at best. Demand quality.
Sorry Coinman you're wrong on the shipping label via e mail...I called the mint 7 times talked to god only knows how many plus 3 supervisors and then it only took better than 40 days to get the return postage label. They will send a return shipping label but only by USPS not e mail. My set had spots on the dollars and the Kennedy half he was loking down at 7 K in the holder. Makes you wonder when you see the quality comming from Perh nd the RCM why the US mint is out of touch with collectors. Case in point I have several 5 oz 10 oz and even 1/2 K coins from other mints and yet the US mint can't produce the 5 oz coins without a major problem.....The US MINT needs to have a change of personal starting at the top and working downward til they find someone with vision to produce a good quality product and something collectors would want to collect ....IE Fractional buffalos , or other timeless coinage or come up with something new and exciting ...but most of all they need to put quality #1 sad but true PS I'm still waiting for my replacement set and they credited my account Duh...if I wanted a refund I would of checked that box...I asked for a replacement. so ......I'm thinking instead of one person swaping out the two sets they cost the goverment more by doing a refund involving more people and depts. to get the job done...sad but true IMHO
Supposedly, they have to refund your account and than bill for the new set. The set should have come with instructions for returning and the label is at the bottom of the Invoice.
Yeah if you want to pay the postage ....but if you want a prepaid label sent you must call and call and call until you find someone at the mint who cares about doing their job right!
Fifty, Knocked lose from it's spot? Did the set come apart? I really can't picture this as the sets are locked tight in their plastic holder.
In my proof set 3 of the presidential $1 were horrible. 2 of them had numerous bubbles in the field and one had concentric circles radiating out from the center to the edge. Unfortunately I didnt check every coin specifically and now my 7 day return has passed. So I am stuck with a $30+ set to unload. My 2009 lincoln chronicles set was received with the holder ripped and unglued and 2 of the cents had fingerprints you could see w/the naked eye. It cost me about $8 to return that set. I may be done w/ the mint. Lack
It is my opinion that you should never wait for proof sets or you'll get the returns from other collectors. I always buy the proof sets near the date of release and have found very few problems with the sets. I may be lucky but I've bought quite a few of them.
Not sure but those circles sound like "Lathe Error" on another post here. I think that's what it was called. May check into it. You should be able to search it as I don't know how to get a link from tapatalk app.
Thanks Dionhurst, I did a check on lathe lines and that may indeed be it, or being an ex machinist at least lathe chatter. The difference I can see is that it appears to cover the devices and the field. It is a sealed proof set so it is definately worth further investigation. I wonder if any of these have turned up? It is the James Buchanan Dollar, obverse only. May be a good keeper after all. Lack
I only buy the SILVER Proof Sets, through the yearly Mint Subscription plan, and I've NEVER had a problem with the product and/or packaging.
I've had similar quality issues with the mint. This past 2010 ASE release did it for me. I just canceled my US Mint account and will buy on the secondary market instead. I don't care if it will cost me double or triple, I'd rather give my money to someone other than the U.S. Mint. It seems like you almost have to buy some moderns certified just to ensure some form of competent quality inspection has taken place.
I'm debating cracking one of the silver quarter sets i bought from a dealer, because the red backing material, or whatever you want to call it...is like flaked or chipped and i kind of worry about whether it will affect the coins or not...
You'd rather give your money, plus extra, to someone who's just paid the Mint exactly what you would've paid them?
I don't buy many mint products as it is anymore (just the ASE/AGE proofs mostly nowadays). In turn, the coins I buy on the secondary market are certified. I rarely have any problems with certified coins. In my experience with the mint and the secondary market, I've had more problems with the mint. Too many times do I see obviously flaws - with debris on coins, clouding, trash left in the proof set (and I'm not talking about the coin designs just to clarify ) to outright damaged coins. So the extra cost on the secondary market it worth it for me.
I've been buying from the US Mint since about 1992. Over all that time I've probably returned about 3 sets due to issues with the packaging and/or coin quality. The return process is somewhat drawn out but the replacements I received were in good condition. Granted sometimes you can get the same quality in the secondary market because the value of the sets go down and I have also bought sets this way and have gotten great quality sets but having the option of both sources is a good thing. Just go with the one that you like the most and gives you the most consistency, when it comes to quality, at a good price.
Well Lack let me know what you find out and if it adds some premium to the coin. I just read that shortly before I saw your post.
