i paid some snow shovelers with circulated Ike Dollars last winter ... you should have seen their eyes light up
I think that Steve is in the perfect position to make a change in our country. If every store owner or manager in our country would stock dollar coins instead of bills for their change, then the Fed would stop making dollar bills.
I think, there is usefulness in both the dollar bill and dollar coins. I use both and will continue to do , without hesitation or reservation. Mostly, to **** off some local business's . It's like the bottle deposit law, some retailers don';t want to reimburse customers for deposits paid and want you to cart the darn things to a recycle center. My feeling is, you sold it, you collected it and you owe me it when I return the empty containers.
You're right about that in Canada you have the looney and the twooney. Not sure of the spelling - but they have a 1 dollar and a 2 dollar coin.
User Here When the SBA's came out, I saved a UC roll. I didn't LIKE them because they were too "Quarter~ish", but found machines that liked them MUCH better than bill readers and kept the full bank roll. Used to get them in change from USPS vending machines. SAC's I liked better and set aside a few each as they are new. When the Dead Pres'z series started I got UC's rolls from my bank, searched for the mysterious no~edge lettering, upside down, position A vs B, etc. Found this forum and started reading up. Now I still bust open the bank rolls, search them then spend them. I even have several places that ask me if I have any of the newer ones as they've come to expect them from me. But these places do not hand them back out in change. I find them to be useful and use them.
i like spending dollar coins. they make me feel like my money has value, as opposed to paper. i just wish more places would hand them out in change instead of me having to ask for them.
Add me to the list who spends, uses, and encourages circulation of $1 and $0.50 coins whenever and wherever possible. I will routinely pay for small purchases entirely with them, and will ask for them in change if possible.
It my understanding that most cash registers drawer do not have a place for dollar coins which is one of the main reason why retail stores to do not have them.
Great Thread! Some more comments to ponder: In 2000 Wal*Mart partnered with the US Mint and tried to circulate the New Sacs in commerce, we ALL know how well that worked. There is in fact room/slot in a standard cash register tray for the $1 coin. Actually there are Two open slots so our neighbors to the North have room for their Toonies! Canada STOPPED the production of the One AND Two dollar Notes to ensure the success of their One and Two Dollar Coinage. England also stopped the production of the Pound Note as they introduced the Pound coin in the 1980's! All we have to do is have our Government STOP issuing the Paper Dollar and our $1 coin will be very successful!! Steve PS Happy Thanksgiving to all CT members!!
technically, that open spot is for halves. but seeing as how most people don't use them (or even know they exist based on some other threads), the extra rolls are placed there.
Indeed....they want us to use the dollar coins but they keep printing ones. Our fine government at work once again.
I spend my cast off prez dollars after sorting through rolls for high end MS coins. Cashiers look at them closely mainly because they don't see them much, some probably never before. Our government wastes a large amount of our tax payer dollars printing and later screening for shredding the one dollar bill whose life expectancy in circulation is approximately 6 months. Coins in circulation last decades. How may of you that search your pocket change find coins from 1965 and earlier? I dare say all of us. Now open your wallet. See any series 1963's? Verrrrry few of us do. Kill the bill and push the coin! Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the EU, etc. already have.
I came across a few rolls of new US presidential dollars. I'm sure glad they're the same size (and probably similar composition), that I can use them in vending machines here in Canada. I doubt my bank would accept US coin if I had turned them in. Since the currencies are almost at par, I don't care about spending them. Cheers eh, jello in Toronto, Ontario
Sheesh! After reading all these responses, I am embarrassed to tell you what I do with them (all of them, including the two dollar bills) -- I save them. All of them. Have done so forever. Don't know why, but I can't bring myself to spend any of them..instead I keep my eyes open for more.. I have done this for 30 years. I can see by the comments that I am not helping the situation.
I just use them like I do dollar bills. Never more than 3, or at most 4, at a time. I save any one dollar notes I get as change and trade them in to the bank. General population won't start using them until they're seen as a convenience (or a necessity, once the one dollar note is retired)
Ordinarily, I just spend whatever I have available. A while back I ordered the 2001 Sac's (all turned out to be Denver Mint) from the Direct Ship Program at the Mint. You get 10 rolls at face value and the shipping is free. I just finished going through them, and there was nothing worthwhile. I only saw a couple that would grade 67. So, I now have 250 Sac's that will find their way into circulation. Chris
Ha..this reminds me of a time when I spent a worn $2 bill at the store, the clerk looked at me with a puzzled look on his face, and he said "are you sure you want to spend this?"
