Not sure which one. I like both proof coins, but the chronicals may be interesting. Whats your guys opinions?
to CoinTalk AvgCollector. If you don't mind clearing up an old man's confusion, what "Chronicles" are you talking about, and specifically which two proof coins do you like Offhand I can think of at least a half-dozen fictional and real chronicles, not counting newspapers of that name; and it wouldn't be hard to list a couple of hundred individual proof coins issued around the world over the last couple of centuries.
Thanks. Oh sorry guys. I was talking about the Ben Franklin commems. I have been getting the proof sets since they came out along with a few other coins every now and then.
It is coin and chronical....its a set of papers with the coin....I would go for the coin...that is the thing that really has value...if the mint wants all they do is push print of the papers and more come out. Speedy
Since it is frequently the item that is least popular now that eventually becomes the desired collectible of the future, I see nothing wrong with collecting the C&C set. It will never be worth less than the coin and could possibly be worth considerably more someday.
More info Ok, let's be more clear. He's talking about these three things: Benjamin Franklin "Scientist" Proof Silver Dollar (BN1) Benjamin Franklin "Founding Father" Proof Silver Dollar (BN3) Benjamin Franklin Coin & Chronicles Set (BN5) I couldn't decide either, so I bought all three.
I only bought what I thought would be the least popular and least minted, the 'Scientist' UNC, not proof.
I didn't buy any proofs, I only like the UNC. Isn't it true that usually there's more proofs minted than UNC?
Always buy what you like the best....don't buy what you don't like as that won't every be any good. When you buy a coin you like even if it goes down you still have a coin you like! Speedy
More people tend to collect proofs than uncirc., so they are minted more. 250,000 total, 50,000 of the uncirculated are going into the coin & chron. sets. That means that there will be 200,000 total of the scientist coins left combined proof and uncirculated, right? Less than half of those will be uncirculated. How are the scientist uncirculated not the wise invenstment?
To be clear....it will never be worth less than 90% of the spot price for one ounce of silver....unless silver does have a tremendous rise in price again. Then you'll be lucky if you get 60% of the spot price. So, even IF silver hits $30 an ounce, you're probably looking at $18 in hand. So a best worst case senario puts you $15 in the hole + $4.95 shipping and handling for a total loss of $19.95 Personally, I don't see it gaining much in value. There are already BILLIONS of beautiful UNC Franklins minted in silver, and 10s of millions of Proof Franklins.
There is a total mintage of 5,565,047 Proof Franklins from 1950-1963.... Just couldn't let that pass----but most of the dates have a lower mintage than the 1909-S VDB. Speedy
