I bought 5 sets of the 50 states quarters in gem state for $ 900.00 back when they when in their hayday. I gambled and still think they will hold up over the long haul... what do you think? ....
You're not gonna like what you find, but you should do a forum search regarding HSN and coin sales of any kind.
Considering that they're raw, you'd currently be lucky to get .30-.40 cents apiece for them, so I think it's going to be a long, long haul.
As long as you think they'll hold up then great. Just do not be disappointed when you try to sell them. .30 to .40 each would be a blessing.
When you say set...are they 3 mint sets? Is it one each from P, D, and S or are they 2 mint sets (P&D)? Some of the S proofs are worth some money. As you have been told and will continue to be told, HSN is one of the worst, if not the worst, place to buy coins. Tehy rank somewhere slightly below Chinese sellers on eBay. So, enough of running down HSN, they succeed at that daily. THE BIG problem with, let's call it investment, in state quarters is this. Millions upon millions of people saved these in MS grades. Tens of millions of each were produced. The classic market structure, as we all know, is supply and demand. The value of a given good will rise ONLY when demand exceeds supply. Look anywhere, HSN, late night infomercials, eBay, Littleton, etc. and you'll see supply is everywhere! These things are like the crabgrass of the numismatic lawn; a weed that is everywhere and in dang near impossible to get rid of. So that this isn't just based on my opinion, there are about a dozen sets on eBay right now, in Dansco albums. That doesn't count all of the other sets out there not in Dansco. When we look at completed listings on eBay, the P & D sets sell for about $50, and from what I can tell PDS sets sell for about $100. There are simply too many out there and I feel there will continue to be for there to ever be a significant premium on them.
If these sets include the silver proofs, you are fine. If not, then :headbang::desk::computer::bangg: TC
HSN is NOT the place to buy coins. For $900 you could have bought a ship load of junk silver and doubled your money. Experience comes at a price. You are poorer but wiser.
We have all made mistakes like this, you are not stupid! Think of it as a learning experience, yes you over paid but you still have 3 nice sets, granted there are LOTS of them out there but thats fine. Don't be discouraged, just move on now that your a little better educated. :smile It's actually pretty sad to see some people here coming down so hard on you.
HSN is all about salesmanship. They hype up the product and offer easy payments. They make things sound and look ideal for the money plus it's convenient to buy at home. It's easy to get sucked in by their flash so charge this experience to the "school of hard knocks". At one time I bought a few pieces from Littleton but got lucky. Silver was only five something per oz then but it took two years of a bull market to help me realize a break even point. Today, I look at those coins and I enjoy them, but they also remind me of what not to do in the future.
