In my other life, I'm a photographer and artist. Two of my favorite artists are Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. While surfing ebay, I came across these two amazing medals and I just had to have them. I know they aren't numismatic items but I thought some of you might be interested in seeing them. Both are 70mm in diameter.(about 2 3/4"): The first is an image of Picasso's famous painting "Guernica" in relief: This one is Dali's "Tempation of San Antonio" also in relief:
Interesting pieces indeed. Also because such medals can usually have a higher relief than coins ... The two were apparently designed by Armindo Ribeiro/Viseu. A short bio in Portuguese is here: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armindo_Ribeiro Just last year, by the way, Spain issued a €50 silver "coin" which also features the Temptation of St. Anthony, and has about the same size (diameter 73 mm). I thought you might enjoy a gallery of medals by Salvador Dali himself. http://www.artmedal.net/author_s/dali.html
Ha ha! These are great. The portrait of Dali is a laugh. His eyes are a chaotic as he always acted in front of the camera. Great links to the other medals and collector issued pieces as well. Thanks for sharing these.
Wow! That is nice! and pricey! LOL! That might have to be a post-Christmas present to myself! I've seen those as well as the Zodiac set. He also did a series of medals for Israel in both gold and in silver which are pretty impressive. Thanks for the comments everyone!
Franklin Mint also did a Dali set to about 1975. but find one maybe hard, as most of the art stuff was melted 1980 thank to the Hunt Brothers
