I like it, looks much more modern/professional. It was long over due.

I like it as well. I happened to check out the commemorative U.S. Army Silver $1 coin. That shield on the reverse is obtrusive at best. What is that shield design supposed to convey or signify ? anyone ? And the reverse design for the Gold struck coins are just awful .http://www.usmint.gov/downloads/pressroom/2011-Army/Gold_O_LineArt_800.jpghttp://www.usmint.gov/downloads/pressroom/2011-Army/Silver_R_LineArt_800.jpg

The landing page is trendy for typical web site design of the moment. People will get used to the new look except for anyone encountering Flash features on a smart phone or pad/tablet type of device, like those from Apple. Coins certainly look better against a dark background so they should have options for viewing coins on black as well as white. The rest of the site is pretty much the same, layout and navigation wise. They seem to have just revised the site half way or in appearance only, which is unfortunate that it wasn't a 100% update. The site sort of has a standard 'bullion dealer' look to it. The mix and scale of the fonts is also a bit conflicting right now and that is bound to have the kinks worked out in days ahead as the Mint gets comments (hopefully passing the revision requests on to the site designers/developers).

Overall, I'd say this is about on par for the U.S. Mint, just like their customer service, QC and products, about half-arsed, leaving room for desired improvements.

I love the new website (compared to the old one). Ditto, krispy, still lotsa room for improvement. Coinman, that is what it is supposed to look like, but I will never for the life of me figure out why they didn't just use the Army Seal or Flag (see below).

ps. Sorry, I know this thread is about the website, not the Army $1.

The shield sure doesn't look as quite obtrusive in your example , the colorization does quite a bit for the overall reverse design. O.K. , back to the main thread topic.

I was likewise confusedby this design

I also acknowledge that this is off-topic and refrained earlier today from comment, but it's been bugging me as well because I also found the design a confusing choice.

Coin Update, in their 12/13 article on the 2011 commemorative coin designs, didn't offer an explanation, only noted the designer's name...?

The reverse of the new silver $1 commemorative is similar to the many (see link) seals of the Executive Office of the President of the United States [wikimedia.org] :

But NOT to be confused with the Seal of the President of the United States:

The seal on the reverse of the new $1 silver commemorative is also similar to the Department of State's seal:

Only the device over the eagle's head appears different from the other similar seals. Perhaps... perhaps, the decision was made not to use the Army's own seal in place of once similar to the Commander in Chief's... the President's own, but they cannot use that design (can they?) since it's already on the Kennedy Half Dollar (still being minted, but NIFC).

    Just my thoughts on this...
