While different, I'm still well pleased. How would you grade this one? What do you think of the photos? What do you think is a good estimate of value based on the new photo?

EAC grade VF 30 details, Skud, net F 12.
TPG grade XF details.
Wholesale value, about $200.

 

How many can you find me in that condition at that price?

man i dunno what to say. my grade is completely different from leads. anyway i gotta say F15 porous, pitted and something going on with the edge there NET G6. still a great pick up for the money marshall.

 

I don't blame you. I just scratch my head every time I look at photograde between F12 and XF 40. It's almost like they just threw them in a pile and randomly selected the next coin as the next higher grade. There is also some difference of opinion on how much premium, if any, the grades R4, R5 and R6 will bring from unattributed examples of the type. I'm pleased because I don't think I paid any premium for an R4.

 

heres my problem. if you look at everything VF35+ it seems to be 94. everything worse seems to be 95/96. they also dont pay alot of attention to the different styles of the late 1830s early 1840s.

 

I personally think Photograde is a great concept which was poorly executed. At least for the early copper.

 

None, but I'm not a wholesaler either. If you sell this coin to a dealer, how much do you think it would fetch?

FWIW, $200 is precisely what a skud F-12 is valued at in CQR in 2006.

What do YOU value the coin at?

 

p.s. please don't get the wrong idea, I like the coin and I think Marshall got a fairly good deal on it. I just "valued" it as how much I think he can get for it in a wholesale transaction -- that's all. No malice intended.

 

That's not too far from what I'm thinking. I'm thinking I got it priced a grade or two lower than it's worth retail which would be near the wholesale price. Of course my estimate of wholesale is about double yours.

Then again, I have the coin in hand and it doesn't show nearly as many defects in hand as the photos show. Color is more like the edge shots and the black specs do not stand out. Surfaces look smoother. I use a modified axial lighting to accentuate the detail and defects.

 

Yes I caught the wholesale part - and a lot of collectors tend to think retail. While not an EAC'er grader I (in my own opinion) would net it at F-15 details. Very nice coin Marshall.

I really like this coin, Marshall. In fact, I can't recall you posting a finer coin. Lots of meat left on that sucker!
