http://mintnewsblog.blogspot.com/2010/12/end-of-satin-finish-officially.html looks like 2011 will see the end of this weird little mini set
It's about time, too! The dies didn't last very long for this "special process" used for the mint sets. As a result, they would be pulled from service, polished and put back into service making crappy-looking business strikes which made it even harder to find nice specimens of coins intended for circulation. The only coins I own that are slabbed as "Specimen" come from the 2009 mint set, so I guess I'll have a warm place for these oddities. I wonder why PCGS decided to go that direction instead of things like MS67SF.
As I attempted to suggest in a previous thread...with the 2011 annual sets coming out in January (at a different price target, most likely), the Mint would either have to raise prices for the the 2010 sets or discontinue them altogether. I think there's a "chance" (as slim as it may be) that the 2010 Silver/Clad Proof sets and the Unc set could be retired early. If that happened, 2010 would be the "key" date for the Satin Finish short set. ...something to think about. :thumb:
I'm glad they're gone....too many NIFC's to keep up with. What do you think this change will do to the value of the satin sets/coins long term? Up/Down/No Change? Will they be included in dansco/whitman etc...albums??
Good questions, but my crystal ball is broken. However, I vote for great potential - wether you like satins or not, you can't argue they are low mintage keys to most modern circulating series.
