I have a 1981 T1(rounded S, not quite sure if thats T1 or T2:goofer:) PRoof SBA. However, this coin has cloudy fields on obverse, sulpher paper damage on revese, resulting in no cameo. It also has heavy PVC dmage on the edge and has many finger prints. It also seems to have light scratches in the obverse field, but it is hard to see because of the cloudy fields. Should I attempt to clean it, send it to NCS, or just spend it. I have no experience cleaning coins, and I have heard that acetone that cuold be used to help it some is a dangerous chemical. If I did use acetone, would it also remove sulpher damage and un-cloud the fields? Despite the damage, it has exeptional detail, and if it was graded by only that , it would probably grade a 69 or 70.

3 strikes and your out! There is just to many issues with this particular coin to attempt CPR. First thing you need to do is determine if this is a Type II but the point is moot if there is damage to the surface under that PVC.

    Good luck,

The finger prints and the pvc both could and probably did, leave permanent damage. If you spent it, it would make a cool find for someone else. I don't think there is a big market for damaged proofs so you won't be loosing much.

Agreed. Spend it. It will be fun for some other collector to spot a proof in circulation.

I came across a print damaged 2007-S proof Washington Presidential dollar earlier this year. Nothing I could do about the damage but it was an interesting find.
