I usually buy odds and ends at my local shops, but yesterday I found a Philippine 1917 twenty centavo silver piece in the world discount bin, the dealer knew it was silver when I found it and just tossed it in my bag of goodies for free along with the other ten or so circ world coins. I have a pretty good collection of Netherlands wartime coinage, its all worn beautiful and blue, and the one with tulips on it yesterday for free just toppped it off! Sure, they may cater to the wealthier crowed, but they sure cater to me as well being a small fish imo. Although, they did call me a cherrypicker, but in a comic manner. I am not sure if that is good or bad?
There is a dealer in WNY who sounds very much like the one you wrote of, and I can honestly say that I am proud to call him a friend. By nature (and from experience), I am very cautious with people who make a living selling coins, and this goes back many years to when I was new to the business/hobby. I have seen this gentleman go out of his way to treat people fairly and with complete respect. I've watched him take the time to sell coins with no numismatic or melt value (circulated Ikes/Kennedys) at face just to keep a customer happy. I could go on and on with examples, but the point has been made. It is always heartwarming to know that there still are dealers out there like this. Reccommend this gentleman whenever you can.... it definitely sounds as if he deserves it.
