I believe the weak areas are grease filled areas in the die. The mark on the A may have been made after minting. PMD ? IMHO

I agree with Gary. Struck through a little and the A is post mint damage.

Hold on guys. I agree with the grease, but those are awful deep grooves in the A. I would have thought that a blow that hard and deep would have displaced some of the metal. I don't see any evidence of this. Also as deep as they are, there are no marks on the adjacent rim or elsewhere. This would mean that it would have had to be a very precise blow (or 2). Not arguing with you guys, just think it deserves a second look. Thanks

I thought it was a little odd that both strikes on the A appeared to be at the same angle

It looked to me like the metal on the a was flattened slightly and if you follow the southern most mark to the north east it seems to continue to the M, but only slightly. Thats why I think it was "sliced" by something. IMHO

The other rhing to keep in mind is this is a 1971 cent. The damage to the A could have happened years ago and the pushed up metal you would expect to see has sice worn off.

I agree. Perhaps its a tiny cud that produced that "doubled slant".

To me, theis simply looks like a couple of strategically yet coincindentally plase hits from other cents. Nice striped effect though!
