Is it the coin or the case?

I am looking at purchasing this 1997 Silver Proof Britannia however in every picture posted the coin doesn't look too good. I asked the seller if the spots in the picture were on the coin or the case and he said the coin was fine and put up new pictures but even the new pictures have the spots on them. I'm thinking it's just smudges and lint on the plastic holder but thought I would defer to y'alls expertise before pushing Buy It Now! Thanks for the help.

It's good that you are asking questions before you commit yourself to the purchase, even though you received a response from the seller. Apparently, his reply didn't convince you. Can you give us a link to the listing?

It looks to me like there is a lot of paper towel type lint on it. If it's on the holder no big deal but if he used a paper towel on the coin there could be scratches I don't see. Is this a safe assumption?

I'd also go with dust and lint. The giveaway is that if you look really closely, you can see that virtually every "mark" has a mirror image on the polished surface of the proof. Nothing some auto plastic polish and a microfiber cloth wouldn't fix IMHO.

That's probably why it looks like there is so much of it then. Thanks for the help, I really want the coin since it is the first issue of the set I'm making, I'm just aware of the scams on ebay and wanted to get some other opinions before committing to paying so much.
