    No doubt. That was hiddeous.

I don't know what's worse though... The coin or the fact someone bought the coin for an obscene amount.

This is not the only one as I have seen these on e bay in the past. The better ones and I know that will strike a nerve here are called enamelled coins. Again the "better ones" were done in the mid 1800's to early 1900"s . They may not be your cup of tea or coffee but do have alot of collectors both in the US and UK. Enamelled coins can be very costly...depending on the coin and how its been enamelled. coins that have multi colors of enamel bring more. Enamelled coins were made into pins, broaches and necklaces. I have also seen rings mostly made of 2.5 us gold pieces. http://cgi.ebay.com/SUPERB-FLOWER-D...UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item1e6045e836 Here is an example of a well done enamelled coin . A multi color half crown. The Morgan that started this thread would not be of any interest to the true enamelled coin collector. Sam

To me, enamled coins, jewlery coins, painted coins, painted dollars, "gold clad statehood quarters," etc... Are ALL defaced coins and do not add any value to the coin.

Such objects are no longer coins in my humble opinion, but simple (usually overpriced) jewelry. Only rarely does it add value, but the Hobo nickels and Charmy's roped Indian edge meet that criteria. Perhaps enameled coins meet that criteria for some.

I don't collect enamels but have known collectors who have....lots of big money in them...and again its what one desires to collect. Any coin altered is no longer a coin as we see it but its still a coin. To me they fall into the cat of love tokens , cut coins, hobo nickels, etc.....but remember one mans junk is anothers treasure. The modern enamells are not worth anything again its the ones done in the late 1700's thru early 1900 s that bring top bucks.
