I've looked around and cannot seem to find anything about this error on the internet. So I turn to the wisdom of the forums to help me! is this a die error? both sides appear to have been dinged though so thats throwing me off as i thought die errors were one sided? any help or thoughts are appreciated! thanks! i couldnt get the pics to upload here so i uploaded them to photobucket: http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j36/widemouthmason/coins/82-errorobverse.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j36/widemouthmason/coins/82error-reverse.jpg
THat is whats known as a cud (on the obverse). It is caused by a piece of the die breaking off. the result is that the metal flows into the void, it also creats a weak strike on the other side of the coin due to the metal flowing instead of being struck by the reverse die. Richard
The cost of grading would exceed the coin's value. You could try looking the coin up in 'The Cud Book' (I think that is the name of the book) where known cuds are listed.
Rob, That is not Blakesley effect. Blakesley effect is weakness in the rims directly opposite a clip, not weakness in strike on the opposite side of a coin due to a cud.
