I have been in a coin shop during an appraisal for an estate. For someone deeply connected to the numistmatist no longer with us, it is a painful process. The reactions I observed were very different from the widow and her middle age son. Having been said, my dealer did not offer the estate 100% retail for the coins. Most of the stuff was modern proof sets and stuff like that (25% of retail... AT BEST for those items). The bullion coins he offfered to buy at 90% melt. And wheat cents were face value. In the end, the two accepted the offer.

Now, I will give you the same advice I gave the middle aged son at that coin shop back in 2007. "You see that little Red Book on the counter? That's a good start of things to look at and what to look for in coins."

And I walked out with quite a few rolls of wheat cents.

If you're getting GSA coins slabbed, I'd use NGC. I know for a fact that they will certify coins in their original holders. I do not believe that PCGS offers this, but do not quote me on that one.

 

You're correct! NGC is the only service that will grade them in the original GSA holder, but the OP should be aware that NGC does not extend the grade guarantee or warranty to those graded in the GSA holder. On the flip side, a GSA Morgan usually commands a better premium while still in the original holder.

Your 78-CC looks to be about an MS63 and would be worth about $300. If it should grade MS64 (I doubt it) it would be worth about $500. Are all of the GSA Morgans from the Carson City Mint (CC mintmark on the reverse)? The 82-CC, 83-CC & 84-CC are the most common and are worth about $200 if they grade MS64. You probably won't have a 79-CC, 89-CC or 93-CC, but any other CC dates you may have (81, 85, 90, 91 & 92) would definitely be worth having graded in any MS grade.

I think it was also suggested that you try a few dealers, not just one. Just because you had one not-so-good experience should not keep you from a good one. If you tell me what area you are located in, either I, or another from the forums will give you the name of a reputable dealer. As for that appraisal fee, a fee is usually discussed upfront without seeing any coins. Once you decide what type of appraisal you desire, you know the cost upfront. As I offered earlier, tell me where you are, and I'll be certain to give you more than one dealer name, who will treat you professionally and fairly. Before you start running off and sending anything to TPG's , a professional opinion will likely save you a bunch of money.

I have someone who knows Jewish coinage ck this out it maybe Gold.we had a lady bring 25 coins like this one and they were 1/2 oz& 90% gold?

 

those are awesome coins...would love to inherit any on them, lol

Bar Mitzvah coin set....no idea how old. The 3 coins on the left are gold. Are these just worth their melt value?
