OK...you have your top four TPG's which are PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG. After that, IMO, you have PCI and SEGS...after that...FORGET about it! PCI used to grade conservatively (old green border slabs) until they went with the current gold border slabs. I don't know why, but it seems that you have to deduct 2 to 5 grading points (all things being equal) for MS grades. They will grade at shows and guaranteed coin authenticity if you need it. SEGS has some tough slabs. But it is the same thing. Deduct 2 to 5 points for MS grades. Of course, buy the coin, not the slab...which is pretty hard to do on sites like eBay. Check this out... http://www.greysheet.com/cdn/cdnccmi.asp
I submitted a problem coin to them and they body bagged it (I thought it might slide and the fee was low). That speaks well for them.
Help me out here. "Body Bagged" I assume means returned not graded. Do the grading services provide the specific reason for this grade?
hehe...you beat me to it CT I think PCI is ok...at times...but you better know how to grade before you buy---if you don't stay with the top 3 NGC/PCGS/ANACS. Speedy
Yeah, but it may not be specific enough. Usually it will say something like damaged, scratched, cleaned, atificial toning, altered etc. But there is no grade - that's what body bagged means - the coin is not gradeable.
let me say this about 65189651 times. ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS . Oh yeah. then you have PCGS and NGC. I don't trust the others for anything. I wouldn't send them a scuffed up jefferson from 1991-d. IT'd come back 70. stick with ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS ANACS .
I think you like ANACS! I myself like ANACS the best as well, but also must advise to go PCGS if planning on selling. PCGS will fetch top dollar sight unseen.
I have two PCI graded nickels that I paid the PCGS price on. They look beautiful and are both unquestionably 6 full steps, so hopefully I haven't been ripped and I am not dissapointed. 1994-P SMS, mintage 167,000, paid $39.00 and it is graded MS69 6 FS. 1997-P SMS, mintage 25,000, paid $200 and it's graded MS69 6 FS.
About pci PCI is a very good grading company they actually beat out PCGS in a coin grading contest and it left PCGS with their pride alittle hurt. The old man died 2 years ago and PCI is no longer in bussiness. I go to the coin shows at camp Jordan, and Dalton Georgia and usually PCI,ICG,ANACS,and PCGS would show and grade coins for a fair price without being a member. Now a quick talk about PCGS they have started using the chinese to make their holders and they will even admitt that nearly a quarter of the PCGS coins in circulation is fake. They have also filed a lawsuit in federal court about coin doctoring which included a few guys in las vegas. so go figure you can send a coin to PCGS and maybe 7 out 10 times you will get a different grade. so if you want to say some of these grading companies like segs, anacs pic are unrealiable you might be wrong PCI is a older grading company than PCGS!!! All those companies have good graders that have been collecting and grading long before me and I'm 41 the PCI guy was in his 70's and grading for 50 years look at PCGS graders some just got out of their diapers, and their grading your coins against so of the oldest graders. Me myself I think its more of who you are or who you know and you'll get the grade you want. I did a test with PCGS I sent the same coin 3 times a 1888 proof seated liberty I got a 62 a 60 then it came back as genuine so I'm guessing that when i send it back next week it will come back as proof 61
Is it? Both companies started in 1986. PCGS in February, I don't know what month PCI started. So PCGS is either older or the difference in age is so small as to be immaterial. And the "old man" you mentioned was the fourth owner of PCI and he only owned it from march 2002 til he died in 2007 I believe. His wife then ran it for about six months before it folded and the business was sold to David Lawrence Rare Coin. It operated as DGS for about two years folded again, was sold and operated for one month as PCI again before folding again. The coins graded during the period of the "Old Man" are considered to be some of the worst grading that came out of the company. As for your grading test, since grading is subjective you will find that you would probably get similar results no matter which TPG you chose to "test".
Heres a another look at PCI and some of the books that they wrote on collection http://www.lincolncentresource.com/FAQ/CoinGradingCompanies.html
I'm not saying their the best but not one grading company is perfect on grading. when ANACS was bought out last year the new owner fired all the graders. I think ICG right now is the better of of the top 3 right now.
