Looks like machine doubling to me. I assume this is a 74 D Kennedy half? If so check the "We Trust" and see if there is any doubling on it or try and get a picture as that is where it would be most prevalent I believe. Oh and welcome to Cointalk!!
It's in the "UNITED STATES of AMERICA". I see it all the way up to and including the "of". It does seem to get less evident as it progresses to AMERICA.
That's definitely machine doubling which is also called mechanical doubling or strike doubling. It's very common on a lot of Kennedy half dollars. If the secondary image appears flat and shelf-like, it is MD. Here are some close-ups of a doubled die on a 1966 Kennedy to give you an idea of what it could look like. Chris
