This came from a roll covered with crud. Had to soak it to identify it. When I pulled it from the bath, I saw this deep indentation. Thought PMD at first, but no marks on the obverse and there is detailing inside the notch. Void in a planchet ? Never seen this thing before.

    Thanks,

Looks like it might be a collapsed gas bubble to me.

Strikethroughs from grease-filled dies seem to be more common in cent production than in any other denomination. If you've ever handled copper pipe or tubing, you will notice that it feels like it has a fine film of grease or oil on it. This grease/oil attracts particles of dust and debris, which is compacted and hardens in the recesses of the die from continual striking. When it finally falls out of the die, voila!

PS. Here we go again! This is another wide-bodied thread where the text is three times longer than the photo.

    Thanks Chris.

    Yep, too wide again.

I felt it was struck with something causing the indentation. The depth is much greater than any of them I had run across so far. Without a visible displacement of metal, I wondered if the planchet had a void in it ? I'll put it in a 2x2 and add it to a vinyl sheet I am putting together of strike errors. Am hoping to get a nice "conversation" page going.

    Thanks again,

    gary
