Well I was going through an old coin collection and found a 1980 silver penny. I'm still unsure at just how legitimate it really is. Could anyone help me out?

Zinc cents did not appear until 1982 (2 years after the date of your coin). In 1980 Lincoln cents were bronze throughout and hence were not plated.

I would save it if you like it.
It's only a penny and in honesty the projects rarely come out that good.

It works a lot better on the pure copper cents than it does on the newer zinc ones. I have a couple I did that came out excellent: one gold and one silver. stuck them in my whitman in one of the blank holes lol
