I was looking for an upgrade for my 1938-S MS66 Jefferson Nickel on E-Bay when I ran across this listing. 1938-S/S Jefferson Nickel **(Rare Variety)** NGC MS-67 Is this a real Jefferson Nickel Variety, or did this guy just make up his own little variety with a coin with machine doubling on the mintmark? I can't find any mention of this variety in an Jefferson Nickel reference book. Furthermore, the guy is quoting PCGS price guide values for an NGC coin. Normally I wouldn't be upset by that, but since the grading standards used by each TPG for Jeffersons are so different, I find it very misleading. The prose about this so called variety being the king of Jefferson Varieties cracks me up. So does anyone know if this variety is real?
It looks like it could be an RPM or a DDO. I'm not sure. It's not listed on CONECA or in the CPG, though. Hmm? If Mike Diamond can't give you an answer, maybe Hoot or CaptHenway on the NGC forums would know something about it. Chris
Lehigh I have been collecting Jefferson nickels, and nickels in general for a long time. As far a s a 1938 S/S I have never seen one. I have never seen one listed in any book written on Jefferson nickels. I'm not saying that there could not be one.New varieties are always being discovered. With that said ....I think this is someone who is grasping at straws. If this seller had something this hot,They would be sending it off to Mike Diamond to get it atributed. They be on the phone to CONECA etc. Selling it for $299.00 for a find like this.... "If it is " What they are trying to sell it as...it be worth alot more than $300 IMHO! Ask yourself if you found this what would do? Would you sell it for $300 when it could be worth alot more not only in cash or value, but in getting your name out into the nusmismatic world with the credit for the find. So to answer your last question is it real I say no until someone like Mike Diamond sez so. Sam
It's a shame, the surfaces of the coin look pretty good in those photos. But I am not going to pay 3-4X what the coin is worth because some guy thinks it is a rare variety. My search for an 1938-S continues.
Lehigh I would pass on this coin....look at some of his other items... Thats what clued me. 1912 d Liberty nickel full LIBERTY NOT! he's got two up one is a bit better than the second... but no way its a full liberty. Look at the I & Y if you pull his listing up. But don't you agree ...I know if I cherry picked a coin from a roll or group of coins I never sell it until I knew #1 it was what I listed to be #2 why would I sell something that I would want for my collection. And why would I sell it for maybe hundreds less then it may be worth. Nice write up and post but I would pass ...you'll find the coin you are looking for and have no worries . IMHO Regards Sam If I run across any 1938 s I'll pm you
I know the seller is trying to pull a fast one and that the variety is not rare but it did look like a nice coin. I will not be buying this coin and my search will continue.
I agree as I have never heard of this Variety and after 72 years one would think that someone would of found it long before this seller. But as Lehigh said a nice looking 38 s
You would think that it would be found before now. but i just this year found a 1901s Lincoln with an RPM that nobody seems to have seen before. That being said, RPM's don't normally add THAT much to the price of a coin. Richard
